5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
I read the prequel to this book & was keen to read this one. It was brilliant. In fact it was so good that I couldn't put it down & stayed up until 4.30am to finish it!!. Janet is a wonderful story teller. You are drawn in right from the first page. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Planter's Bride
This was an easy book to read and the outcome was fairly predictable. Sophie and Tilly were contrasted quite well as were their husbands. Tam was well drawn as a character but Wesley rather vague abd shadowy. It was OK but rather in the field of 'chiclit'

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BREW, 26 Feb. 2014

This writer continues to deliver. Her follow up to The Tea Planter's Daughter has an enjoyably broad sweep, taking the story from Edinburgh and Newcastle to the Punjab and Assam. It deals with fascinating themes and the engrossing tale keeps the pages turning. I hope there might be more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance, adventure and some interesting history, 14 July 2014

Really enjoyed reading this. It's a well-written page turner with a good plot – romance, passion, adventure, suspense, tragedy, torn loyalties and misplaced assumptions. Some good characterisation too. You may even find yourself booing and hissing at one particularly ghastly character. And feeling just a little drawn to at least one of the young male characters. Not to mention wishing you had Tilly's and Sophie's sense of adventure and the nerve to head off into the unknown.

But it's also an intelligent, vivid and well-researched (partly based on actual diaries and letters by JMT's grandparents according to her website) look at what life was like for some of the British in India under the British Raj. Really captures some of the feel of the adventure and of the ups and downs of life. Some good descriptions too of both cities and countryside.

I also liked the bits set in Edinburgh and Newcastle and the glimpse into life for young men and women in the early 1920ies in post-war Britain.

Another really enjoyable read from Janet, the world of the British in India sprang from the pages. Having read the previous book as well I can't wait to see what comes next.

The prequel was good, this was even better and kept me engrossed til the last page. If it's a holiday read that you are looking for, then I would recommend giving this a try.

Great read but now quite what I was expecting thought there may have been more relevance to previous book
and did not expect the setting it was mainly based not giving the story away but as I live there I was expecting a more exotic location
somehow. Please do read it
