Not a lot, if anything, I can add to Gerard Hennessey's almost proselytising review! How about the summary on the back sleeve: "Strollers, happy rockers and the odd tearjerker from the Swamps, all with the distinctive South Louisiana sound. 14 titles previously unissued" (and/or alternative takes). Ian Saddler, compiler, has done his usual fine job on this, the seventh in the series, fine notes (handy if you've got any/all the previous six, tho Ms Sauce would no doubt be dismissive), plenty pics, label shots. If you've thought some of these releases have been a little esoteric for your taste, this a fine entry point: it's basic southern r&r, with the merest hint and influence of Cajun. Treat yourself, widen your experience...

5.0 out of 5 stars Let The Jukebox Keep On Playin', 7 April 2014

Gerard Hennessy (Wilmington, Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swamp Pop By The Bayou (Audio CD)
More years ago than I can remember my love affair with the music of South Louisiana began thanks to a fabulous LP called Another Saturday Night. Before listening to it I knew nothing about swamp pop or indeed any music from south of the old Mason-Dixon line.

Throughout the decades since I have searched for, begged for, and paid vast amounts of money for everything I could get hold of from Johnnie Allan, Tommy McLain, Rod Bernard, Warren Storm and Clint West, to mention just a few of the stars of the genre. Ace Records here in the UK have been lifelong supporters of this music and in the past couple of years have launched a fantastic new series of bayou themed releases with titles such as Boppin' by the Bayou, Bluesin' by the Bayou, and Rhythm & Bluesin' by the Bayou. Top class products every one.

This is the seventh and latest release in the Bayou series and the first to focus exclusively on swamp pop. Not that swamp pop is entirely absent on the other six. Far from it. One of the delightful things about the music of South Louisiana is that it constantly transcends boundaries, genres and labels. Different strands, styles and influences merge together, synthesise, separate and reform again into a glorious swirling gumbo of heartfelt vocals, guitars, accordions, saxophones, fiddles and pianos. There really is no need for me to say much more about this excellent recording, other than its a corker. If you know this music, a glance at the list of performers - Warren Storm, Jivin' Gene, Rocket Morgan et al - not to mention the fantastic Tommy Strange with Lonely Heart - will tell you all you need to know. And if this is all new to you may I just say that if you love music comprising of infectious cajun waltzes, bayou two-steps and rock 'n' roll alternating with country, bluegrass, blues, soul and gospel , then this album is certainly for you.

Go feed those hungry 'gators baby! They'se ready to ROCK!
