5.0 out of 5 stars Back on Form
Michael Lewis, as a former Salomon Brothers bond trader, has a perspective on the financial markets that other journalists do not. He also writes fluently, and is skilled at taking complex and obscure subjects and explaining them clearly. Of his books, Liar's Poker and The Big Short are terrific, whereas Boomerang seemed to me as if it had been rushed out and rather...

3.0 out of 5 stars good journalism, but somewhat unsatisfying
Michael Lewis is trying to explain the inner workings of the stock markets to a broad audience. If you are a finance professional, the book lacks the kind of detail that would make it really satisfying. There is a much bigger story here than just the IEX founders and a lot of other characters and institutions are glossed over very lightly. The exchanges in particular and...

The true story of how banks' customers large and small were abused by the organisations they entrusted their money to.
....abused by banks and high frequency traders who twisted (badly drafted and policed) rules intended to protect the public.

Fascinating but drawn out. Probably could have been written in a fraction of the time. That said people should know more about how the stock exchanges of today operate and how it creates the latest robber barons!

This is a really interesting book about 'high frequency trading' which brings it down to the level of the common man with clear and easily understood examples.

It's scary stuff but an excellent read that will open your eyes to how the odds are stacked against us by the big banks and brokers.

Written in a very clear manner. An eye-opening expose of what seems to be currently legal (but shouldn't be) - electronically assisted front-running of exchange orders.

How do high frequency traders make so much money so quickly?
How do you lose that money to them without even knowing they've taken it?
Why do microseconds matter so much to high frequency traders?
Why are they allowed to get away with it?

5.0 out of 5 stars insightful, detailed and a great story, 29 May 2014

Michael Lewis does a great job in simplifying the complexity in this insightful story of how the banks have been making millions, or even billions, at the expense of the investor and the honourable people that stood up to this and invented a new exchange to counter it. 5 stars. Well worth reading.

Michael Lewis has done it again; an inside perspective of HFT. The author has an ability to break down complex situations so that anyone can understand them whilst telling a story from a human perspective. Make sure you read Flash Boys and also his other financial books such as Liars Poker and The Big Short.

Really enjoyed this book - enough detail without being too dry on the technicalities.

Have worked in the banking IT industry for a while and this opened up the dark-side of low-latency trading for me!

I always suspected they were up to no good and this book explains one of the ways in which the Big Bang has accelerated the advantages available to those with the money and ingenuity to take massive financial advantage. the rest of society being none the wiser and a lot worse off.

an excellent book.
