This is the second album from the very talented Dan Wilson who performs under the title `Withered Hand'. Whilst he does have a rather impressive band he is also a member of the Fence Collective (`King Creosote' et al). This is very much a theme album and it seems to be love - and what a lovely theme.

Opener `Horseshoe' is just a sweet love song that is just so nice that it will insinuate itself in your head and you will be singing it all the time. This also showcases the wonderful lyrics and story telling that this band manage to pack in. `Black Tambourine' features jangly guitar, great harmonies and a feel that makes it seem like summer. The whole album has the sort of high production values that mean you can make out all the many instruments and that coupled with a lovely clear voice make this a joyful experience.

Third track `Love over desire' is a simple love song and whilst it slows the pace down a tad it compliments what has preceded. `King of Hollywood' ups the beat again and has the sort of tempo that you will want to cut a rug to. Things slow down to ballad style with `California' and `Fall apart' is a great pop tune and starts the slower aspect of the album. This all builds up to pen ultimate track `Heart' which has the band at full tilt again until we finish with the amazing `Not Alone' which packs in everything and is the sort of song that makes you want to hear more from this great band with brass and a great sing along `la la' bit that Okkervil River would be proud of. This is a smashing album and that is a word you don't hear often enough just like the phrase that there is not a duff track on this record and both apply here.

Never heard of Dan aka Withered Hand until just over a week ago. Never normally buy any music from HMV but will always be grateful to whoever decided to put the album in the recommends section.

One of my past "finds" from years ago was the Bright Eyes album "I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING" who I had never even come across. Problem I have now is I don't know which one I like the most!!!!! And I love that Bright Eyes album!

ADDED BONUS - Get on the net and find he's home grown UK talent AND he's gigging next month in a nice small venue (the best!) not far from me - AND ITS ONLY £8 ENTRY!!

I can see the future now......sat telling the grand-kids.......... that I got into Withered Hand early ......... before the rest of the world discovered him. Good luck Dan.

This album may not be quite as whimsical as his earlier work - definitely give his back catalogue a listen - but the sound on this one is smoother, surer, fuller, and a little more "mainstream" without losing any of his earlier angst-filled lyrical genius. This is a difficult trick to pull off, and has to be good for sales. The album is full of catchy-yet-melancholy tunes that stay with you. He is also great live!

Best album I've heard in many years. Standout song songs for me are Horseshoe and King of Hollywood. I started out thinking Neil Young and a hint of very early David Bowie, but then after a few plays I realised that its a unique style with such powerful lyricism. Can't wait for Withered Hand to visit the Souht West

Sometimes joyful and stirring and at other times sweet and melancholic the lyrics and vocals on this album are just beautiful. I only wish the tour was coming to a town near me. Never mind, I'll just have to keep listening to the album over and over again. No hardship.
