I reviewed Volume 1 of this series, which was released in the Autumn of 2013, with glorious acclaim (!) and Volume 2, released this March, matches the extraordinary high standard of singing and playing of The Sixteen in Volume 1. Surely Bach himself would have been hard pressed to find a choir/soloists of this talent with the limited resources he had in the early 18th century.
The two Masses, G Major (BWV 236) and A Major (BWV 234) are separated by a sublime performance of Cantata 79 (BWV 79). The clarity of singing and playing continues to be superb in Volume 2. Again, the recording is second to none, which seems to be the hallmark of the "Coro" label. If you are a Bach music lover, buy these two volumes, which have some of his finest choral music. You will not be disappointed.

This is volume 2 of a set of two, recorded 2013. The only mass NOT covered in this set is the 'famous' b minor mass. Both masses here are very sympathetically recorded and bring out Bach's ability at borrowing his own works. Interspersed with these works is the well-known Cantata BWV79, also well recorded, which contains the 'famous' duet in the 5th movement. The CD booklet is, given the paucity of information we have at present, well presented, and includes a brief history of the 'mass' as a compositional tool.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who is a professional musician herself. She has told me that this is a truly beautiful recording so I feel it is worth me giving her opinion as I just love music without knowing anything about it.

As with Vol 1 of these Lutheran Masses, the Sixteen sing with a thrilling clarity and precision that illuminates the music and ;fits the soul

Just beautiful. The singing of Harry Christopher's Sixteen is sublime and lends itself wonderfully to these cantatas.

This is the follow up recording to the first volume, which was outstanding. This, too, lives up to that description.

Devoted to J S Bach but for some reason was not able to 'catch on' to this disk. The singing, as you would expect, was superb. Must be me!
