5.0 out of 5 stars Why do I like Paul Bley, 18 Jun 2014

This review is from: Play Blue - Oslo Concert (Audio CD)
Other reviewers have already pointed out that Paul Bley is not Keith Jarrett (this comment is not a slight upon either).and that the ECM sound will not cause any complaints. It is difficult for me to be specific about the appeal here, longer pieces help, but then I am familiar with Bley's world (though not musically trained at all). The negative reviews here are probably the most revealing, we Bley fans like this record, well yes ... and it may well be one of his best, OK. But what if you are new to his playing? Can you identify with a reviewer who tries but can't get a piano solo? The whole Bley/Peacock/Crispell world might be strange to newcomers, if this is you Play Blue might be a good place to try to break in, maybe not everyone can take to everything but it's worth a try. If you reading this wondering whether you really do need (yet) another Paul Bley recording ... you probably do!
