5.0 out of 5 stars A scholarly view of St Joan., 7 Feb 2014
This review is from: Joan of Arc (Kindle Edition)
Edward Lucie-Smith has produced a beautifully crafted narrative of Joan's life. He admits that there is little new to add to the story after so many accounts have been written both in English and in French. His version is important because he raises both the spiritual and psychological explanations of her behaviour. His description of the Dauphin and his family gives us a
clear picture of the corruption and chaos that was France in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Lucie-Smith writes with clarity and style. This is a most enjoyable read, for students and enthusiasts

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling! Convincingly told, highly erudite and consistently enjoyable!, 18 Feb 2014
This review is from: Joan of Arc (Kindle Edition)
Edward Lucie-Smith's eloquent prose gracefully steers through the life of one of History's most countlessly examined figures. What makes Lucie-Smith's book such a dazzlingly original contribution to the thousands of works published about Joan of Arc is his invitingly convincing account, lucidly describing her life from birth to tragic execution. Readers, both new and knowledgeable of Joan of Arc, will certainly profit: this is a skilfully pieced work that weaves a kaleidoscope of historical views while, remarkably, remaining untarnished by theory.

This review is from: Joan of Arc (Kindle Edition)
I downloaded this for free onto my kindle but having read it I would have gladly paid good money to read this biography of Joan of Arc. Very well researched with insightful comments and understanding of the primary source documents. The bibliography and notes makes up about 20% of the downloaded file so the actual book is 64% of the file. But so very enjoyable and also disturbing to read in detail about the 'trial'. It's fifty years since I first read about Joan in Look and Learn and I have finally read something that adds to that in a very meaningful way. Thank you Mr Lucie-Smith.
