How to play black-jack, the anime
on 31 August 2014
Long overdue its UK release, this concise number finishes up the Mardock Scramble trilogy in style - if not necessarily with skill. You can expect the usual luxurious Instagram style, all tinted colours and gloss. But beyond that, this definitely feels like the weakest of the trio - bogged down as it is by a frustratingly obtuse blackjack game that takes up pretty much the entire first half of the movie. It might be a piece of advice to brush up on the rules of the game before you start watching.
Part two delivers what we all really came here for. Rune vs. Boiled, the final showdown. And it's suitably bloody. And while the ending might not deliver the emotional punch it could have, everything is mostly all nicely tied up, and you begin to understand the machinations behind this whole sordid affair. Just don't expect the film to live up to the cyberpunk trappings that initially looked so invitingly drawn out in the first installment.
