I'm excited to find a new fusion artist who combines North African and Middle Eastern influences with Western ones. It's a rich field, but there's always room for a gifted newcomer -- and Imed Alibi is very gifted indeed.
What he brings to his music is not simply his talent (he is an outstanding Tunisian percussionist who has backed the likes of Rachid Taha and Safy Boutella) but a slickness that would, with a lot of musicians, be off-putting. In Imed Alibi's case, the level of organization is a delight to listen to. While I love the ragged edges and spare arrangements so common in this field, the "wall of sound" which Imed Alibi generates is thrilling.
A very exciting album, and highly recommended to all lovers of dramatic, pacy, Middle-Eastern-flavoured soundtracks.
