Sad and silly..
on 3 February 2011
This author's got a gift for suspense. However he squanders it in this overblown nonsense. When he's screwing tight the tension, it's almost painful. When he moves back to normal life he's so slack and his character so cardboard I almost stopped reading. About 400 pages of this book are a sort of tense foreplay. The last 100 pages are an unbelievably slack and messy climax. Another reviewer points out the worst of this, balloon chases and comically inept villains.
Incidentally, I seemed to detect a slightly racist undertone. A young black woman is singled out for sexual humiliation by one of the villains. And a male black character come to a messy end after it is made clear that he has come up from the lowest level of slum aided by affirmative action. It could just be clumsy writng, though.
