Excellent series, badly-authored DVDs
on 26 August 2014
Dragon Ball is a legendary series, one of the most influential anime of all time, and a personal favourite of mine. The series itself gets five stars every time.
The quality of this box set is pretty decent in general too, but there are a couple of glaring, amateurish, deal-breaking (for me) flaws with it if you want to watch it with the original Japanese audio. Worse still, Manga UK were warned about these flaws present in the Australian release (which this set is based on) well in advance, with plenty of time to correct them. They have knowingly released a faulty product.
The subtitles for episode 73 are in fact "dubtitles"; they aren't a translation of the original Japanese dialogue, but instead a word-for-word transcript of the dialogue from the English dub, which is really very different. Unless you actually know Japanese, this is very bad news for fans of the original version - no proper episode 73 for you.
When the Japanese audio track is selected, after the first half of episode 81, the DVD skips to episode 83 instead of playing the second half of episode 81. This is an enormous flaw - the disc literally skips an episode and a half, and this is supposed to be a professional, official release.
I hate to give a bad review to a Dragon Ball product, because the series deserves so much more. The problem is that is also deserves so much more than this kind of shoddy treatment. I'm still hoping that Manga will do something about this in a future printing of season 3.
