Ingenio, a really useful set of pans from Tefal.

I knew from the start that there was something very unusual about this set of saucepans just from the size of the box they come in. It's a lot smaller than you would expect and that's all about the removable handles.

The Ingenio set of six pans - two saucepans, a sauté pan (which is a big shallow saucepan) two frying pans and a wok. These should be enough to cover most daily needs. I particularly liked the lids also and thought them most practical and stylish.

The removable handles are easy to clip on and release and they grip the pans firmly. I found the concept of removable handles a little strange at first but soon became accustomed to them. There are some real advantages.

Once the handles have been removed, the pans look good on the table as serving dishes. They take up surprisingly little space in the cupboard, dishwasher, sink or fridge. The pans can be used in the oven and it's a lot easier and safer to remove a pan from the oven by clipping on a cool handle than by having to use an oven glove to hold a hot handle.

The two robust plastic covers supplied for the two smaller saucepans are a great idea, snap them on and you have storage containers ready to go into the fridge.

The glass lids have folding handles so they can be stacked easily and neatly. That may sound like a small point but it makes a big difference where space is a consideration.

It's not all about the handles, the non-stick pans work as well as you would expect from a premium brand like Tefal.

My only gripe is that the black non-stick surface is a bit dreary, especially when using the pans as serving dishes but that is a small point, Overall I love my Tefal Ingenio pans and would be happy to recommend them as an excellent buy with a predicted fair level of longevity.

Earlier reviews have fully covered the thoroughly ticked boxes of this excellent idea from Tefal :

* Space saving, easy stacking

* Versatility: the ability to use these slightly deeper than normal frying pans (without the handle) in the oven - less washing up, hurrah!

* The handle, clipped back on before removing from the oven means this comes straight to table as an attractive serving plate without faffing with oven gloves. Safe in the oven up to 260C - which is I think higher than most domestic ovens go anyway.

* Light in weight, yet very obviously sturdy and tough - safe in dishwasher.

* Even cooking - I have not been aware of particular hot spots - heat conducts well
* By all accounts metal tools can be used, (if they aren't too sharp - no knives - or used too swiftly - eg whisks)

* Easy to clean

One reviewer has already suggested (an excellent idea, in my book) that these could also double as pastry/flan tins

The only unknown is that these (gratefully, very gratefully received as pans-for-review) are marked as 'trial offer' - and so no price listing exists. So.........value for money is the question mark - no idea whether pricing is competitive or collapsed-into-a dead-faint-with-shock

Not so much out of the frying pan into the fire, when the frying pan goes straight into the oven with no need for any 'out of' to take place!

~ TEFAL INGENIO ®
~ ENAMEL
~ Made in FRANCE
~ COLOUR : BLACK & STAINLESS STEEL
~ INTENSIUM NON-STICK

'Ingenio Enamel

The Ingenio collection is available with an enamelled exterior - featuring Tefal's Intensium Non-Stick coating that can last twice as long as traditional non-stick products. The enamelled products feature an anti-warp base, which adds resistance, and durability to the life of the pan and the frying pans feature Tefal's Thermo-Spot technology, which lets you, know when the pan has reached optimal cooking temperature.
The Ingenio Enamel range is compatible with all hobs except induction and is dishwasher and oven safe.'

I have been using these for over six months now (ceramic hob/fan assisted oven) and they have proved to be very useful and hardwearing, given the hard life they tend to lead.

In the (white) box, which measures around 32.5 cm x 32.5 cm x 28.5 cm are 13 neatly stacked pieces:

~ 6 x bases of varying size and depth, all of which stack within each other
~ 2 x handles (not oven or dishwasher safe) TEFAL PATENTED/10 year guarantee. Lift load max - 10 kg.
~ 3 x glass lids 16 cm/20 cm/24 cm (not ovenproof)
~ 2 x plastic lids 16 cm/20 cm (for fridge storage)

which make up into:

♦ 16 cm saucepan
♦ 20 cm saucepan
♦ 22 cm fry pan
♦ 28 cm fry pan
♦ 26 cm stir fry pan
♦ 24 cm sauté pan

The handles measure around 18 cm in length and are reassuringly robust in hand with side buttons to press in to open and a sturdy lever type mechanism to firmly close.
'To detach the handle, press in on the buttons at the sides; to attach press the lever underneath.'
There is a bit of a knack to this but it soon clicks into place(!)

Without the handles, the bases can double up for use in the cooker and the little one turned out a beautifully moist fruitcake, which was kept fresh by popping on the smaller of the two white lids supplied. Rubber edges protect the edges of the glass lids which have inbuilt steam hole/pourer and the wing effect extension to the knob area makes it easier to pick up. If I had to find a criticism, it would be that the glass lids are not ovenproof because, they look like neat casserole dishes!

All the items are easy to wash up by hand, which I do, and if using a dishwasher the need to manipulate handles into suitable positions is eliminated.
On the same level, the bases all handily store inside one other for neater shelf storage, requiring just about 12 cm with all in situ.

Making use of the 'INGENIO build your own set' capability, I do like the set & design, so I have just added the 14 cm sauce pan to my collection which sits insides the others when not in use. Bearing in mind that it doesn't come with a handle (or a lid), I was delighted to pick it up on the last day of a well-known department store's 'Clearance', at half price, last week.
Like the others, it doesn't have a lip, but my requirement is for sauces and this size suits me best for this purpose.

ooOoo

From the use & care leaflet:

► 'Before using non-stick interiors for the first time, condition the pan by spreading one teaspoon of cooking oil over the interior with a clean cloth. Wipe off any excess. You should then condition the pan regularly to maintain the performance of the non-stick coating.

► Do not use knives and whisks.

► Patented 'Thermo-Spot' technology lets you know when the pan has reached the optimum cooking temperature (c 190°C.) The spot turns solid red.

► Your pan can be placed in the oven without its lid and handle up to a maximum temperature of 250°C.

► Certain detergents may contain corrosive elements, which can harm cooking utensils containing aluminium. In the dishwasher, the outer coating may become dulled and discoloured due to the action of certain detergents. Our guarantee does not cover this type of wear.'

I’m really not sure about this concept. The cooker to table model is somewhat over done in marketing and not really that useful in reality. Certainly from my own experience it’s a totally oversold model of use and not something I do in reality. This takes that model from the casserole to the sauté dish, an even further reach. The idea is that the fry pan, becomes the oven sauté dish, becomes the serving dish on the table. The USP is the detachable handle which turns a decent non-stick fry pan/sauté pan into a shallow casserole disk and serving platter. For what it’s worth the handle works well, it’s easy to attach and detach and feels solid.

The pans are decent quality and pretty good to cook on, though for the smaller pan, the handle is too heavy for stability on some hob types and can cause the pan to tip. This is a common failing of many smaller pans with over engineered/ergonomic handles and it’s extremely annoying as well as being dangerous.

I can’t really recommend this, both for the over engineering concept and the health and safety failing with the smaller pan even though the cooking experience is OK on the pans themselves.

My wife is the talented one in the kitchen and likes to play with recipes, she's also a fan of Jamie Oliver's cooking and has only envied to see him semi-prepare something on the hob only to then transfer it in the same dish into the oven. . . until now that is. . . because she is delighted with this pan set because they can do just that, and more.

They are lightweight and the handle clasps firmly and detaches easily with just a click. To be honest, there is a slight knack to attaching it right, which basically involves tilting the handle at a slightly higher angle than it's used at, and pressing the `trigger' button, hey presto, job done. It's released by simultaneously pressing the two side buttons. Couldn't really be simpler. Oh, and apparently, once attached the handle can hold pan weights up to 10kg, and are guaranteed for 10 years. They also be bought separately: Tefal Ingenio Removable Handle 5 Stainless Steel / PTFE

These pans are ideal for anyone with limited storage space in their kitchen as they're stackable whilst also being deeper than most and you can use them to serve to the table (not really that classy, but convenient) or you can order Ingenio lids separately and store the pans in the fridge e.g. Tefal Ingenio Set of 3 Hermetic Plastic Lids - 16 / 18 / 20 cm

I like this pan set too but, as I'm the talentless one in the kitchen, I get to do most of the cleaning and what makes these pans so good is, especially when food is baked on, because the handle detaches, I can place the pans in bottom of the kitchen sink, fill them with water and leave them to soak (something I could only do with ordinary pans if I were to fill the entire sink and leave them at a large angle (because of the handle). And another good thing is; the non-stick coating is excellent, it takes no time at all to remove even the hardest, dried-in food.

Based on both our experiences we rate these pans as a solid 5 stars.

Firstly, these two pans have a really nice, non-stick surface, although the actual pans are quite light. Now, there are pros and cons to this. On the plus side they heat up quickly, but you'll have a harder job holding a consistent heat. There's still something to be said for cast iron.

But that's not really what these are about. The detachable handle works well, being easier to attach than to detach - which is the way you want it. Sizewise at 22 and 26 cm the two pans comfortably sit side by side on the hob. Not having handles for both pans rapidly became annoying, and more often than not I was shaking them around with a pot holder, which was fine but not exactly ideal. Eg you have the handle attached to one pan and want to quickly shake the other - are you really going to detach the handle, attach it to the other pan and then detach it back to the main pan? Of course not. So long as all you need to do is give it a quick jiggle them a pot holder is adequate.

Honestly, I don't find pans with permanently attached handles to be particularly troublesome.

Take away the handle and you can leave the pans in the oven. You can do that to an extent with a decent pan anyway, but you're limited with how long and at what temperature you can leave a typical bakelite style handle in there. Even pans with silicone covered handles shouldn't be left in the oven at top temperatures for long - but not much should really. Long story short, if you wanted to make, eg a nice single layer cake then either of these would work. You'll not make a sandwich sponge though, unless you're patient and cook each layer separately.

The shape of the pans doesn't lend itself to being ideal ovenware anyway. There's not much of a lip around the rim of the pans to get a good hold on. I'd be wary about this if you're putting the pans in the oven while they contain eg cake mix, or batter for toad in the hole or giant Yorkshire puddings or Dutch Baby pancakes, where the handle would be dipping into the liquid if you used it such that you'd need to "cup" the pan as you put it in the oven. This coupled with the sloping sides could get messy. There's a reason most baking pans have steep sides and enough of a lip to hold on to (while holding a cloth or pan holder).

So they're not for baking, but if you wanted to sear some meat and then let it cook through in the oven then they'd be ideal for that, as opposed to just transferring the meat to an appropriate baking tray.

I am curious to see how the larger pan would handle making a pan pizza, where the sloping sides might actually be an advantage and not require quite as much olive oil to line the pan - necessary with a traditional baking pan to be sure the pizza will slide out in one piece and won't stick.

The handle system works, the cooking surface is really nice and the handle comes with a limited ten year warranty. Not the cookware, just the handle. I wish I could say storage was simpler but there's not a lot of room in my cupboards because of all those pesky pans with permanent handles. Not really - they slipped right in, fine - packing my cupboards is like playing Tetris.

3 out of 5. One man's versatile, is another man's identity crisis.

Kitchens are getting smaller and storage is at a premium. That makes it difficult to store things like frying pans with their big, long handles because they take up a lot of space in the cupboards. Luckily this product has an innovative feature that helps with that - a detachable handle. That means the pans can fit in the cupboard taking less space because the two pans that come in the set fit into each other, and then the handle does too.

The detachable handle is easy to use. To clip it on you put it over the edge of the pan and pull in the button underneath the handle to secure it, a task that takes little effort. Once in place it is very sturdy and not at all likely to slide or come off. And with a 10-year guarantee the manufacturers are confident that this will be the case in the long-term too.

You are also unlikely to accidentally detach the handle from the pan. To detach it you need to press two side buttons on the handle simultaneously, again requiring little effort. And the buttons are in a place you wouldn't normally touch the handle when frying.

The pans can double up as oven dishes too, so you get a frying pan and an oven dish. And they are easily transferable between the two because of the handle you can use to move them. Also you can remove the oven dish from the oven without the use of an oven glove, again you just use the handle.

The pans are light. The quality is good. The colour of the pans is black so they should fit with any kitchen décor. The pans also have a nice design on the base.

The pans have passed the test of pancakes and omelettes, flipping them to the perfection. They are incredibly non-stick. They passed the test of fried chicken and fish with flying (or should that be frying) colours, nothing adhering to the surface. Cleaning them is easy, and you shouldn't get any grease in difficult places around the handle, which normally happens on frying pans, because the handle is detachable. The only negative is that there is no lid included in the set (although I think Tefal do other sets that include lids and you can probably get them separately, 22cm and 26cm are the ones you need) but would definitely recommend.

Plus Points

1. Space saving thanks to detachable handle.
2. Longer lasting as it's usually the handle which goes first for us! Handle is guaranteed for 10 yrs.
3. Versatility - dry fried chicken in it, coated in spiced breadcrumbs, transferred to oven, straight to table for chicken fajitas.
4. Less washing up.
5. Great deep sides so I can do stirfries, hotpots, lots of veg without overcrowding the pan.
6. The usual Tefal quality.
7. Ability to use metal utensils if others aren't immediately to hand.

One Minor Negative point - it would be perfect if this set included a lid but there are other possible combinations, separate items available for purchase.

Saucepans and frying pans are notoriously difficult to store - I have had to resort to drilling a pan rack into the wall in my kitchen to store mine on, and it takes up a lot of space. So I jumped at the chance to try this new design from Tefal, where the pans all stack neatly into one another, the handles detach and the whole set takes up a very small space in the kitchen cupboard. It's very neat and an ideal solution to crowded kitchen cupboards and awkward tilting piles of pans.

As well as being very easy to store, the pans are very convenient to cook with. Instead of having to transfer food from a frying pan to an oven dish to a serving dish and then to a leftovers tupperware, you can use the same pan for all of these functions. It saves on effort, time and washing up and makes cooking much simpler!

The pans seem to be excellent quality, with a high-performing non-stick coating, and although the detachable handles take a while to get used to, they attach solidly and there appears to be no risk of them detaching. I have used a very similar Tefal red-spot frying pan for many years and it both looks and works as impressively today as it did when I purchased it, so I have no doubt that these will last for a long time too.

Overall, these are great multi-purpose pans which save you space, time and energy. Recommended.

I am a bit of a kitchen utensil freak, I like nice quality shun knives, copper bottom pans and stylish cutlery. I usually buy top end items because I believe they last longer and are therefore more cost effective. When buying pans in the past I have never been attracted to the Tefal brand. Whilst these pans are not top top quality in terms of non stick coating, I believe the coating will wear through quite quickly, they are nevertheless excellent pans for the price. Supposedly the unique selling point of these pans is that they can be used on the hob, oven and then be used for serving at the table, due to the detachable handle. The idea of this is not new. I can remember my Grandmother having a set similar to these in the 1970's and in that time they were made by Prestige. These pans are similar and I really like the idea. They are perfect for searing meat and then adding the sauce and cooking it in the oven.

Overall, whilst the idea of a detachable handle is not new, this set is very nice for the price and I can highly recommend them.
