I bought this for "Sloppy Cosmic" which is a glorious eleven, almost twelve minutes long rework of Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic. Unfortunately, it is not identical to the 12" vinyl: This track (and a few others) have been peppered on the CD with newsflash samples about the murder rate in Detroit. That's been a dated production gimmick since Paul Hardcastle's "19". Get the 12" vinyl or watch it on Youtube.

Otherwise the music is great. Really great. If only the lyrics were not full of B*tch, Motherf*cker, N*gger etc. I would really love this. It seems so unnecessary to me but maybe it's authentic to Moodyman's scene. A real shame.

I can't be mad at Moodyman though as he redeemed himself with the "Moodymann presents nuttn but magic feat...J.A.N." video on YT. Soul Skate Y'All!!!

Great cd. Funky, sexy and moody.
Moody...what a perfect name. You're Moody...Never quite the same.
Lyk U use 2.
Come 2 me (with Nikki O) and Ulooklykicecream.... in 2:59 starts part which is great .

You need this album and this is best way to pay respect to Moodymann and his talent.

Despite its length this untitled, or self-titled - not sure how you tell - LP by Moodymann is without doubt his poppiest to date. The extended avant-garde electronic and jazz sequences of CDs like "Forevernevermore" and "Silence in the Secret Garden" have all but disappeared to be replaced by radio friendly numbers like "No" and Lyk U Use 2".

Whilst this remains a thoroughly entertaining record across its 74 minute run time the one thing that is missing compared to previous Moody albums is the sonic innovation and because of that I'm not sure what a younger audience would make of it. Although the record still contains more than its fair share of 12 letter words, it sounds maybe a little pedestrian compared to the likes of Kanye West's "Yeezus". Dixon Junior's less of an angry young man and more of a party animal these days. This is a feel-good jam with a hip-hop feel - to me not unlike, say, the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique". Only, perhaps, the likes of "Sunday Hotel" and "Sloppy Cosmic" take us back to the recondite Moodymann of old - as does the Aphex-esque artwork.

Whilst tracks from the LP have been picking up airplay on BBC6 Music it seems inevitable that this release will ultimately be ignored in favour of less deserving artists - which is a shame because KDJ, and Detroit house and techno in general, never seem to get the recognition they deserve. 4.5/5.
