5.0 out of 5 stars The Profile of Death, 9 Aug 2003

Sam Vaknin (Skopje, Macedonia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is a blood-curdling page turner. But it is also a meticulously researched study of the inner recesses of the mind of a psychopathic narcissist. The incredible story of Kristen H. Gilbert, a VA nurse who murdered her patients, probably to show off, especially to her paramour, the facility's security guard. The book is a parallel anatomy of the disintegration of a personality - and the merciless slayings of veterans, young and old. It also provides a breathtaking and intimate view of how ER and ICU operate in modern medical facilities and how vulnerable these are to manipulation and worse. The book is refreshingly politically incorrect. The author makes no secret of what he thinks of his subject and her unspeakable acts. But, like a good detective, he never loses track of the scent. The plot thickens, the tension mounts, the reader is constantly kept guessing and on the edge of his seat. The only regrettable thing is that this superb thriller is based on real events. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive Reading., 8 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is my fifth book by M.Williams Phelps, and it is by far the best yet.
The story centres around Nurse Kristen Gilbert, who works in a veterans hospital in Northampton, Massachusetts.
The Angel of Mercy, turns into an Angel Of Death, as she killed many brave veterans with a powerful drug that brings on Cardiac Arrest.
This goes into detail, explaining her relationships with her Husband, her security guard lover and co-workers.
She is a compulsive liar, who manipulates everyone to get attention. Basically, she is you're worse nightmare.
The writer goes into her background bringing up accounts from those closest to her.
I was hooked from the first page and her story will stay with you. This is a well written account of a complex woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly written, 16 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read quite a few books on true crime, but this one is the best yet. I have even gone back and re-read it a few times. The story is perfectly structured, with an even mix of background information (without chapter-long tedious information) and plot evolution. Its a definite page-turner which will keep you up all day and night until you finish. Kristin Gilberts special brand of psyphopathy is accurately described with selected examples, and the whole story reads like a creepy, scary movie playing out in real life, which will leave you jumping in your seat with anticipation.

Gave 5* as this book was very well written, i have nearly all m.phelps books and it made a change to read a medical true story, ooh what a horrid nurse!! My opinion is she should have gotten the death penalty. But thats america for you. A must read for any crime lovers, and nice touch the photos to put faces to the culprits, and the poor victims.

I have never come across a criminal like this before. Having read about others of this kind, She has no great aim to be a heroine. She kills patients for the flimsiest of 'reasons' and foresees very little trouble for herself. A nightmare.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow what a book, 17 Dec 2012
this is the second book i have read by mr Phelps i didnt think it could be any better but boy this one is truly unputdownable, if that is a proper word lol, i just wanted to know what was going to happen next all the time, once you really get into it, it is like watching a really suspenseful film, kristen is diabolical , so sad for her victims and there familys as it always is in true crime, really well written , and if you are like me and prefer truth to fiction, you cant go wrong with this book.
