4.0 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem, 29 Oct 2010
This review is from: Magazine (Audio CD)
'Magazine' has very much been the overlooked Heart album from the 70s, principally because it was enmeshed in legal wrangles on its original release, a stain which has not entirely been removed from its reputation.

It's not the classic that its bookends 'Dreamboat Annie' and 'Little Queen' were - this is true - but this is still a fantastic album with some real beauties to discover on it.

Many will be familiar with the hit single 'Heartless', but just as many will not have discovered the gorgeous title track with its catchy hooks and Carole King-like piano, or the Led Zeppelin heavy rock of 'Devil Delight', another live favourite from that era. 'Just the Wine' has all the beauty of an autumn evening by the fire, and 'Here Song' is a great little ode to simple happiness from Ann Wilson. The cover of Nilsson's 'Without You' features an Ann Wilson vocal to put any other covering artist to shame!!

There are a couple of superb live offerings here too - 'I've Got the Music in Me' is a rocking stomp-along celebration of Heart's early club gigs, whilst 'Mother Earth Blues' is an early showcase of the amazing versatility and range of Ann Wilson's vocals - great blues guitar from Nancy too!

Essential for any Heart fan, and a great addition to any rock collection for anyone else - HEARTILY recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars SACD version, 22 April 2014

I was blown away by the sound quality of this SACD,
I had the album on LP, and the standard re-issue CD,
but the clarity of this SACD took me by surprise, well worth the extra dosh.

This album has a very famous story behind it; involving legal disputes, armed guards and session musicians.
I like to listen to the album on musical merit however, and consider it as Heart's fairly awesome one-point-fifth album.
Basically if you enjoyed any of Hearts first four Classic albums, 'Dreamboat Annie,' 'Little Queen,' 'Dog & Butterfly,' or 'Bebe Le Strange,' then your pretty much guaranteed to enjoy this.
The album opens with 'Heartless,' which is a traditional, heavy opener like all of their early albums. Straight after that, Heart's heaviest ever song can be found, the menacing and reverb-y 'Devil Delight,' which is worth the price of the disc alone.
The quieter 'Just The Wine,' and 'Here Song,' are brilliant emotional folky numbers that would fit right onto any of Heart's first three albums and help bridge the gap rather well indeed.
A special mention is deserved for the title track 'Magazine,' which comes across as Led Zeppelin-meets-Elton John (which is probably what they were going for considering the songs they cover on their reunion dvds)which clocks in at over 6 minutes and goes through a range of moods and tempos.
The only problem with this album is that 'Mother Earth Blues,' (the live blues jam) doesn't stand up to repeat listens as much as the rest of the album does, and it could be argued that Heart while originals are awesome the album would flow better as an EP of those songs, without the extra cover songs.
However if your not splitting hairs and actively looking for reasons why this isn't a great Heart album you'll just find a well written, enjoyable classic rock album.
I highly recomend this album to any new Heart fans who want more from the classic period.
