I’ve seen Joe live a couple of times and he was OK without being outstanding, which was also my view of his last Tom Hambridge-produced outing “Hellfire” from 2012. However, this new record, also produced by Hambridge, goes off with a bang right from the start courtesy of the Stones-style title track, closely followed by the similar rocking “All I wanted to do” – with its added brass. And Joe also covers the old Stones’ song “Ride on baby” to great effect bringing it bang up to date. It’s not all rocking though, there is lots of variety here from the raw slow blues of “I’m gonna walk outside” with its biting Elmore James-style slide guitar to the melodic 50s rock and roll of “Don’t let go” and the 60s soul funk of “Soul city”.

I criticised “Hellfire” for not having enough good songs but this album is full of excellent tracks and is really well-produced, with Tom Hambridge also playing drums alongside bassist Tommy MacDonald, Reese Wynans on keyboards and second guitarist Rob McNelley. This band follow Joe all the way to provide seam-less backing for every track, perfectly matching every style and mood from the closing atmospheric soul ballad “Keep the faith” to the down-home blues of “Love enough” and on the 'psychedelic' blues “Not in Kansas anymore” they even sound like the Who! Full marks to Joe and Tom for making such an outstanding record that rocks but also has lots of energy, variety, humour and also a real blues feeling that is right up there with anything from new kids on the block such as Gary Clark Jr.
