A sub-par recording of a great concert
on 1 July 2014
Much of the criticism that many reviewers have directed at this CD concerns the sound quality. They have a point: the mix and overall sound levels are not very good, serving to highlight the shortcomings in Jim's ageing voice, whilst subduing the decent performances from the rest of the band members.
That said, the energy from the performance still comes across well, and sometimes that's what a live performance is all about. Not all live concert CDs can be as brilliant as Live in the City of Light, but this one still manages to showcase an epic band having a lot of fun in front of an enthusiastic audience.
I was at this concert, and it was hugely memorable (and somewhat nostalgic). In my view, the band played an almost perfect set-list, loaded with songs from their 'glory days', and you can tell they were enjoying themselves. For me, then, this CD is a worthwhile purchase, as a memento of a great night.
