The Movie Guy "Movies from A to Z" (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dead Shadows (DVD) (FSK 18) (DVD)
The film opens with some nice special effects and scenes from outer space as an object breaks off of some dark matter and enters the blue planet...the one covered with water and called "Earth." The story centers around Chris (Fabian Wolfrom) who had some sort of alien encounter as a child and is afraid of the dark. Ten years later a comet arrives and aliens once again occupy Paris. Chris goes to a party and drinks some drink laced with....who knows and then starts seeing faces melt like he took too much acid. But wait! It seems this dumb stuff is somehow real as aliens do whatever it is evil aliens do.

The film started great until someone opened their mouth then it was Oh oh. This is not dubbed very well. I don't mean 60's Italian film bad, but it was noticeable. The plot was not well developed. You had some idea about aliens, but the invading alien horde wasn't really explained and the night time scenes peaked your interest, but not excitement level. Not as entertaining as that Hitler/Nazi thing at the center of the earth, but more realistic.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (Caterina Perazzi )

This review is from: Dead Shadows (DVD) (FSK 18) (DVD)
For a low budget film with some admirable special effects it ultimately fails to live up to the initial promise. And at just around 74 minutes its a slow burner which slowly unravels as it tries to squeeze too much in and hampered by some poor characters and dodgy acting.

So the initial scene (10 years previous) an asteroid appears out of a worm hole and begins to dissolve as it enters the earth's atmosphere. The film's main character then witnesses his father go a wee bit potty and slaughter his mother. Fast forward those 10 years and Chris is a bit of a computer nerd. He ends up hooking up with his neighbour rather conveniently as some of the characters are paper thin. In the meantime he runs into the local nutter who speaks of a fighting off an invasion around about 10 years ago. Anyone seeing a pattern here? So Chris is invited to an 'apocalypse party' as another comet/asteroid is passing by the earth. All this eats up about 45 minutes of screen time and its only at the party that things start to take off. As I mentioned earlier, the special effects are worth praising. Whilst some are the compulsory cgi, the rest are impressive enough.

So the viewer is still in the dark regarding just what the hell is actually going on. The film does try hard to squeeze a lot in and that is unfortunately a weakness. Incorporating ideas from films such as 'Night of the comet' and '28 days later' is fine but don't stretch yourself too thin on a small budget. But that's what eventually happens. Fair play to the director for giving it a go but perhaps less is more. Whilst not an outstanding film, hats off to those involved for giving it a good go. With a bigger budget the director could probably make a pretty good movie as long as work is done on characters and dialogue. At times the film seemed very disjointed but not the worst horror film made by any means.
