Season Pass of Infamy
on 14 July 2015
A review of the Season Pass so far. I will update as more content is released. The Season Pass entitles the holder to brand new game content released over the course of 6 months. If you just want to read about a specific release of the Season Pass i have but the titles of the releases in capitals. just incase you dont want to read the entire lengthy Review
MATTER OF FAMILY was released 14/7/2015
This story mode is set before events of Arkham Asylum and allows us to take control of Batgirl for the first time in Arkham history. The story revolves around the Joker kidnapping Commissioner Gordon and holding him in an old Amusement Park called Seagate. Joker diverts Batman away chasing a red herring and sends a message saying only Batmans sidekicks are welcome or he will kill the Commissioner immediately. Enter Batgirl and Robin (Tim Drake Robin..*oof*) who arrive to rescue Gordon.
The story is well paced and written with the atmosphere and amazing beauty of most Arkham Games. Although its not particularly challenging anything that star The Joker voiced by Mark Hamill is worth it in my book. We also get to see Harley Quinn in her original outfit for the first time in the Arkham series. The environment is once again rich and engrossing looking beautiful and also fun to explore with hidden Easter Eggs. (And some not so well hidden ones, I found the villain Starro hidden a way in a shut off room thinking it had something to do with the main story). This is definitely a great setting for a Joker story.
Batgirls controls and game play don't really feel that fresh or new. In Arkham City when you switched to Catwoman you felt and moved liked Catwoman and the same with Robin. This time round I just felt very meh, Like I was just wearing a different skin. Batgirls superior Hacking abilities are just shown through the use of the same Remote Hacking Device Batman uses and her moves, skill set and gadgets are exactly the same as Batmans (although she is missing a few gadgets).
Still fun to play and a great expansion that obviously a lot of effort has gone into creating but it really does feel like just a DLC rather than part of the Arkham World. The most disappointing part for me though was the fact that no new Showcase Trophies are unlocked or character profiles! why go to all this effort of creating these freshed up characters and then don't let us see them up close. The same with the Red Hood DLC, you face Black mask but don't unlock a character profile for him or a character trophy. I hope this will all be rectified in future.
To give you some sort of a time frame I managed to complete this DLC and get all its new Achievements in approx 3 hours and that was at a very leisurely take in the views and explore pace.
THE 1989 MOVIE BATMOBILE PACK AND THE BAT-FAMILY SKINS PACK was released on the 18/08/15.
This allows you to take control of the 1989 Batmobile in two new Batman movie themed race tracks, the Arkham Knight AR Batmobile race tracks, the AR pursuit challenges and YOU CAN USE IT IN THE MAIN GAME! Unfortunately it has no battle mode but still fun to drive around Gotham City at increased speeds. The two new race tracks resemble the Riddler tracks just in a new design. They are extremely well designed visually, looking stunning and bringing a fantastic nostalgic feel to fans of the original films. They can be difficult to complete for people who arnt well versed in driving the Batmobile so if your looking to achieve 3 AR stars make sure your skills are polished off. The new courses can also be attempted in the Original Batmobile for even more extra AR stars, but seeing as the courses were designed for the faster 1989 Batmobile I actually found the courses a lot more challenging.
Along with this your also treated to the 1989 movie Batman skin and in the Bat-Family skin pack you unlock the following skins to use in AR challenges, Main game and DLC: 1990s Catwoman, One Year Later Robin, Arkham Origins Batman, Iconic Grey & Black Batman, 1970s Batman and the Original Arkham Nightwing.
CRIME FIGHTER CHALLENGE PACK #1 was released 1/9/15
This unlocked some relatively boring AR challenges with no new areas or combat specifics and worst of all no new Achievements to unlock for completing them. These are time fillers more than anything and while it does allow you to use you new character skins its barely worth it. Unlocking 2 predator challenges in previously visited areas which aren't particularly challenging and a small handful of combat challenges. All completed with 3 star ratings in under half an hour.
2008 TUMBLER BATMOBILE PACK was released 22/09/15
I had been looking forward to this seeing as my favourite film of all time is The Dark Knight, add on top of that the impressive job previously done on the 1989 Batmobile I felt for sure that i would really get the feel of what its like to be behind the wheel of that stunning vehicle.. well.. what a mess.. definitely the worst vehicle in the game. The 1989 Batmobile gave us vastly increased speed with the trade off being some loss in handling. The tumbler is the slowest vehicle in the game and also the worst on handling so far.. I felt like I was playing 50cc Mario Kart for beginners or something. On the big screen the Tumbler looked really impressive. Demanding power, intimidation and ear splitting sounds when screeching around corners unfortunately the car falls short of all of this in game and left me feeling rather sulky. The two new tracks that come with the Batmobile are pretty average, the tracks are both set in a movie studio so you don't even feel like your tearing up Gotham as blue screens and cinema memorabilia litter the course. There are a few positive sections such as the Batcave entrance and the roof top jumping but the rest is rather bland and uninspired. The 1989 Pack definitely out does this on all fronts... oh well bring on the Adam West TV Batmobile I suppose..
GCPD LOCKDOWN AND CRIME FIGHTER CHALLENGE PACK #2 where released on 29/9/2015
Set after the main game GCPD Lockdown is described as Nightwing taking action to stop a breakout attempt from the GCPD by the Penguin. Unfortunately this DLC is reminiscent of the disappointing Pre-Order DLC. Consisting of one new Bludhaven Docks challenge map, The GCPD roof and a half new area of the under construction GCPD bull pens for one Predator challenge. Penguin spends the entire time stuck in a lift, The police force is nowhere to be seen and the DLC takes about 10 - 15 minutes to complete.
It all felt very sloppy game play wise with very little challenge or fulfilment. There is a new flame thrower carrying thug during the predator challenge. but I didn't get to see him in action due to the ease everyone was taken out. Dialogue slightly made up for this with Nightwing being portrayed exactly how he should be, mocking the Penguin all the way with wise cracks and digs. The was also a line which seemed me like a slight dig at the Barbara, Tim relationship as well. Lucius mentions their wedding to which Nightwing sarcastically replies something along the lines of "oh great". I hope that is a little dig at the relationship as it will make me happy that im not the only one that thinks the absurd Barbara and Tim relationship was a load of crap. Everyone knows Dick was in line for Barbara's hand in marriage!
Challenge pack #2 introduces 3x new combat challenges, one for Batman, Catwoman and Nightwing, 2x new Predator maps, one for Batman and Robin and one for Robin solo, we also get a new Batmobile challenge in the form of racing to checkpoints to destroy drones again. These maps where slightly more fun and challenging than Challenge pack #1 but yet again introduced no new areas, environments or enemies. Overall yet another fairly disappointing month for Season Pass holders. Lets hope October brings us some much needed cost worthy DLC!
1960S TV BATMOBILE AND CRIME FIGHTER CHALLENGE PACK #3 was released 28/10/2015
BATMAN! BATMAN! BATMAN! well the good news is the Batmobile is pretty damn good, after the terrible Tumbler i had little hopes for this less impressive looking Batmobile. Luckily though this Batmobile brings even more speed to the table and side swipes that if used correctly can cut your course times dramatically. The Batmobile is really light weighted and you can feel it through the handling as you skip over jumps and drift round corners with relative ease (just watch the back end of the car). Not to make things to easy for us though, because the car is so light if you so much as touch a pot hole or obstacle the car literally goes flying and takes a lot to regain control. this is good though as it keeps things interesting and its a fair trade off for the increased speed and manoeuvrability. Unlike our tumbler which we traded off both speed and handling for average looks.. yes it still hurts to me this day. The new courses are fun, bright and challenging with a few surprises in store and a new way to cut your time by introducing time bonuses. The courses themselves may hold secrets as a I accidentally found an Easter Egg the other day when i crashed into a barrier and found myself picked up by a forklift truck as the camera panned over to allow me to watch a clip from the 60's show. Who knows what other secrets I may have missed in the other courses? I would also like to confirm that yes while you are playing these courses the song nananananana Batman is on continuously as background music. its hilarious.
Challenge Pack 3 introduces the hardest Batmobile race yet. Which had me sweating with rage to complete with three stars in the Tumbler and normal Batmobile, we also receive another two combat challenges with one for Nightwing and Batman which has time increasing depending on the amount of thugs you defeat. and a generic combat map for Robin in the style of the other Batman games with the combat separated into four rounds. Alongside this are two new predator maps one for Batman and Nightwing again and one for Robin. These are abit more challenging than the previous maps concentrating heavily on stealth and planning to gain all three AR stars. Again no new areas but I still enjoyed these challenges and with the level of difficulty increasing makes for a good amount of time needed if your looking to get all AR Stars with all characters and Batmobiles. Also two shiny new skins of the 60's Robin and Catwoman which arnt going to see any use seeing as Xbox players will still definitely not be getting the Adam West Batman Skin. Good job I have editions on both consoles.
CATWOMANS REVENGE, A FLIP OF A COIN, WAYNE TECH PACK, BATMAN VS SUPERMAN BATMOBILE AND BATMAN SKIN, CRIME FIGHTER CHALLENGE PACK #4 was released 24/11/2015
Catwomans Revenge presents a beautifully presented new Arkham Episode set after the main game as Catwoman seeks to finish the Riddler for good. (Apparently being beaten up, imprisoned, humiliated and having a years worth of hard work destroyed wasn't enough). Catwoman tracks down the Riddlers robot manufacturing facility beneath Winslow Schotts (The Toymaker) toy factory, a nice little easter egg for Superman fans. The new toy shop environment is well designed and really interesting, with plenty to take a look at. The Episode is again relatively short the first predator part set in the Toy Shop is pretty easy, the second section is a combat challenge that presents a bit more of a challenge as you effectively have to beat a certain amount of Riddler Robots as the arena becomes electrified and smaller and smaller. Riddler doesn't make an appearance but he can be heard on the intercom trying to communicate with his factory from the prison on the phone.
A Flip of a Coin is the last Arkham Episode starring Robin. Again set after the main storyline. Set in a trash incinerator joint to a courtroom somewhere and somehow during his honeymoon.. I'm not a big fan of the Tim/ Barbara romance so I sighed and swallowed my fan-boy rage to play through this. This episode again presents one new predator challenge map and one combat challenge. Two-Face has conveniently escaped again, furthering the contradiction of the end of Arkham Knight as Gothams villains obviously have not been affected by the events and are still living the life and breaking out of prison. Not as detailed and interesting as Winslows Toy Shop in Catwomans Revenge I managed to breeze through this entire episode in less that 15 minutes. A bit of a tactical approach is needed to take out the medics first but apart from that it presents no other challenge. Two-face doesn't make much of an appearance, appearing at the end to be taken out in a cut scene.
The new Batman Vs Superman Batmobile is quite average, it handles really well and has a similar speed to the Arkham Knight Batmobile. I suppose with very little to go on while designing the Batmobile the best they could do is play it safe, which isn't a bad thing, The Batmobiles we already have are satisfactory enough. Apart from the Tumbler..
The Wayne Tech pack was also pretty disappointing. A very frustrating, boring figure of 8 track and also a circular tunnel track. This is something I would have expected to be in the main game as part of the initial training for the Batmobile. Not a paid for DLC.
Challenge Pack #4 again introduces some more Predator and Combat challenges. These are also accompanied by challenge maps from the previous DLC packs. This means we get some newish environments to explore and perfect. With the recent updates each challenge map can also be completed by each of the playable characters making for hundred of possibilities to gain new AR stars.
Currently set for December Release is the long awaited Season of Infamy missions. which includes four new Most wanted missions (for your main game I presume?) These include:
Beneath the Surface: Starring Killer Croc, who we already got a brief look at during the last chapter of the main game
In From The Cold: Once again pitting Batman against Mr Freeze. Why though? is a burning question after there kind of reconciliation in Akham City.
Wonderland: Has Mad Hatter playing a twisted game with the police of Gotham City bring him into conflict with Batman
Shadow War: The best has been saved until last. The League of Assassins return to Gotham but who is leading them? (My guess is Prometheus and Ra's) And what is it they're after? (Probably a mix of revenge and the destruction of Gotham.)
Along side this long awaited DLC we will also get the original Arkham Batmobile skin from Arkham Asylum, The Dark Knight Christian Bale Batman Skin to drive our terrible Tumbler. Also expected alongside this is Challenge Pack #5. Something that doesn't have a release date currently and may not be linked to the Season Pass is the Matter of Family Harley Quinn Skin and Arkham Knight Skin for their respective Characters. Which is good its not just the Bat Family getting skins. Now Rocksteady bring us Azreal Batman armour from Knightfall Skin, Cassandra Cains Batgirl Skin, Red Robins Skin, Batman Reborn Redhood Skin and Battle for the Cowl Skin and Suicide Squad Harley Skin. Also make all characters playable in free roam.
These details may change as new information is released and I will endeavour to update this review to include dates and to reflect a more accurate star rating as new DLC is released and reviewed. I will be extremely annoyed if we arnt given updated showcase trophies and character profiles as the game updates though. especially seeing as it was done during Arkham City and Orgins (well the trophies anyway).
