5.0 out of 5 stars A jaunty cruise around the Baltic
This isn't a tourist guide book of the Baltic region and neither is it a history book, although both elements are contained.

The author gives his opinions on each port of call as he cruises the Baltic with P&O on board the Oriana and he does not neglect to give his opinions about the ship, P&O itself, the tour guides and the food as well so it is comprehensive...

This isn't a tourist guide book of the Baltic region and neither is it a history book, although both elements are contained.

The author gives his opinions on each port of call as he cruises the Baltic with P&O on board the Oriana and he does not neglect to give his opinions about the ship, P&O itself, the tour guides and the food as well so it is comprehensive in that sense.

You will learn how things are seen from the point of view of Poland when it comes to Russia's part in WW2 but then you will also learn the Russian viewpoint about the German invasion of St Petersburg. He loved Copenhagen but doesn't know exactly why and he wanted to like Stockholm but couldn't. Make up your own mind as you take a "live cruise" with Barry French - yes a "live cruiese" because the book was written whilst he was ON the ship so his impressions were fresh as he typed out his adventures.

You will even learn a few historical facts which he sneaked into the book in odd places.

An amusing read that also provides that mystical feel-good factor somehow. I think it is probably because he really loved St Petersburg - which is hardly surprising.

I very much enjoyed Barry French's account of his cruise to the Baltic.
But...I must say that Barry would feel at home on that British TV show "Grumpy Old Men" (Hahahaha). Maybe it's a British trait - I too have a British husband !!!
I enjoyed the book nevertheless and look forward to my own trip to the Baltic this coming July.
Cheers Barry !!!!

Yet another entertaining read from Barry French. I have read many of his other books and was looking forward to reading this one.
I do enjoy his sense of humour and he is brutally honest. I was feeling pretty low on the morning I downloaded his book, but my spirits were soon lifted. It was probably a mixture of learning about life on board a cruise ship, the romance of setting sail to foreign lands and also the frustrations of being at the mercy of the ships company that made it an enjoyable read.
I always learn something from reading his books, be it the countries he is visiting, or a piece of trivia about something loosely connected.
It's fair to say Mr French is not the most patient of people, but his impatience leads to the funniest of stories in my opinion.
For £1.15 you can't go wrong can you?

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, without being a guide book., 1 July 2014

Found this an easy, enjoyable read.
I have family who love cruising, but its not something we've ever fancied, and this book pretty much made me realise that I probably wouldn't enjoy one!
But I enjoyed reading the views of the author, and found his opinions of both the places he visited, and the ship interesting.
