When one considers the technical challenges of making this film 90 years ago the quality of the final product is extraordinary. Modern docos on Everest (Chomolongma) are almost perfect and push the extremes in your face. They almost make it easy! That it was not one can so easily forget. This is an amazing and beautiful film and should be seen by everyone interested in this mountain. Technically the restoration is brilliantly done and like The Great White Silence / 90 degrees South it is one of the greatest early documentaries of all time. I did not care very much for the new score written for this silent film and was happier to go with the Borodin based original which sounds splendid but each to their choice.

Everest and Antarctica have been brought into our living rooms for decades now, these wildernesses have become frequent and commonplace subjects of television. Both have suffered from the intrusion of the modern world.
But how would those first audiences, 90 years ago, have received these stunning images?
These are amongst the first images of Tibet, and Antarctica. Both documentaries are more poignant because we know the final outcome was fatal. Scott's team were found fairly soon, but it has taken modern exploration to finally find Mallory's body; did he and Irvine make it to the summit?
This is no modern documentary trying to answer modern questions, looking back from our time of high-tech clothing, this footage is contemporary; it's authentic, shot in real time. For these explorers, Scott and Mallory, they were using the high-tech of their day.
I don't think we can criticise the footage or directing because these are the only record of two fatal expeditions and it is what it is. It cannot be changed or edited. We will not get "the director's final cut". This is it - that's all there is - and the explorers lost their lives making them. How different would these films have been had Scott's team and Mallory/Irvine survived, and even succeeded in their endeavours? Would we look at these films differently.
These are great records of great men of a lost age of pioneers.

Watch these enthralled, the early documentary style and scenery is breathtaking. They were very brave people and these films capture the extreme cold and adventure very well. The sound track is brilliant and makes one shiver in sympathy...

This is indeed an epic film about exploration in the first half of the 20th century. It is inspiring to watch this film.
