3.0 out of 5 stars YOUR MOTHER IS A PIECE OF WORK
This is a film about the known events of the day Kennedy was shot and the days that followed. It uses film footage from the era as well. The movie centers on three lives: Abraham Zapruder (Paul Giamatti) who shot the famous film; Robert Oswald (James Badge Dale) Lee Harvy's (Jeremy Strong) brother; and Dr. Charles 'Jim' Carrico (Zac Efron) the one guy of the three who...

This review is from: Parkland - The JFK Assassination Story [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
IT IS OFTEN SAID THAT PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD REMEMBER WHERE THEY
WERE WHEN TOLD 'JFK' HAD BEEN ASSASSINATED.....well if like myself
you were around at that time, like myself you probably do.
The film was of course released to coincide with the forthcoming
anniversary of that chilling day in 'Dallas'
The film portrays the intense and desperate effort at 'Parkland' to
revive the mortally wounded President, followed by events that followed.
The arrest and subsequent killing of the suspect 'Lee Harvey Oswald'
The now famous 'Abraham Zabruder' filming of the entire incident that
he'd filmed from as close as 30 yards away.....what conclusion if any
would the Secret Service make of what had been captured on-film.
The authorities were frantically trying to make sense of what had taken
place.
Perhaps skipped through to quickly, the film is a frantic and intense
account of the days following the incident.
The event remains on of the most talked and argued about happenings of
the 21st century.
Conspiracy Theories are many, could 'Lee Harvey Oswald' have been acting
alone ? ..Could he have got-off those three shots with the weapon he had
in the short time frame available to him ? ...Were other forces at work,
was it a ''HIT'' ?
Why was the body of the slain president removed so quickly from Parkland
hospital ?
There are, almost certainly answers to many of the questions out there, most
secret documents are released for public scrutiny after between 25-50 years
have passed, whatever is known about the JFK assassination will not be
made available for another 25 years............makes one wonder what is really
known about the killing.
Everybody that has an interest, like myself, have an opinion and have drawn
your own conclusion.
Do the public at large deserve answers....of course they do.
Questions are still asked 50 years on, what is really known ?
Why did the secret service break the laws of the state by removing the body
before the required autopsy ?
The 'Zabruder' film taken of the events of that day clearly show the presidents
head jerking backwards upon impact of the fatal bullet.
Was that fatal shot made by someone other than the 24 year-old 'OSWALD' ?
The questions will continue to be asked, many more than I've listed that's
for sure.
SPECULATIONS -CONSPIRACY THEORIES - REMAIN 50 YEARS ON !!
If you, like myself, remain interested in the events of that day, you may, if
you haven't already be interested in the film 'JFK'
Another very good film worth a viewing is the account of the 'Cuba Crisis'
which took place one year before the assassination. 'Thirteen days'
No Oscars to be won here, however well worth viewing.
Special features include...The Director's commentary and Deleted Scenes.

Charles 'Jim' Carrico (Zac Efron) the one guy of the three who worked at Parkland Hospital.

The film doesn't add anything new to the discussion. It is a well made docu-drama, but as someone too familiar with the events and people involved, I found it on the boring side. The film included scenes such as getting the film developed, cleaning up the aftermath of the hospital, and removing seats from Air Force One. A younger generation who only know the event from history books might find the film more interesting and entertaining.

Too little, too slow, too boring.

2.0 out of 5 stars curiously uninvolving, 3 April 2014
By
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read the reviews, I knew Lee Harvey Oswald would not have the courtesy of 'alleged' before assassin and, given the immediacy of the events filmed, his brother seemed quick off the mark to condemn him. But as I am (still) reading Manchester's Death of a President, I wanted to get a visual feel for those historic moments, hence buying the DVD.

Unfortunately, it was curiously uninvolving - except right at the end, oddly at Oswald's funeral, which is why I gave it an extra star.

I realise the film is primarily about Parkland, the hospital, and the events therein. Manchester is a gifted writer who knows how to spin out the smallest details, yet JFK being brought in and then casketed out raced by in the film. There was no sense of how a short amount of time could also, paradoxically, seem quite long (which is what Manchester seemingly achieved in his book). Except for the exaggerated thumping of Kennedy's chest by Carrico. The Efron performance looked like he was trying to bash any remaining life out of Kennedy, not resuscitate his fading heart.

Also based on the Manchester book, Jackie was not the hysteric portrayed here. If anything, most reports are that she was calm and even polite, and highly insistent on being with her husband at all times.

So much apparently seemed to happen at Parkland that this 'video clip, does a disservice to that.

Would I recommend you buy it? Probably not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, low key, engaging movie., 15 Mar 2014

This is an excellent film; no hunky heroes, no silky-smooth sex scenes, no 'shoot outs', unless you count the shockingly realistic portrayal of JFK's assassination as seen at a distance by a hapless member of the public. A true story, engagingly told through superb acting and well-paced directing. I felt was there. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, 25 April 2014

This film is about the assassination of US President John F Kennedy but cetainly isnt a conspiracy thriller. Oliver Stone made that film back in 91, this is something a bit different.

The film is more of a glossy look at certain characters and how they were affected that day in November 1963. The doctors/nurses, Secret Service agents, the FBI, Abraham Zapruder (who shot that famous footage of the shooting) and Lee Harvey Oswalds family are all featured. You probably wont find out much you dont already know about events but its still an enjoyable overview of a traumatic few days. Personally I found the glimpse inside the Oswald family the most interesting, his shrill mother and reserved brother being two of the more memorable characters.

The Dallas of 63 is excellently realised and the way they've used real footage from the events is very effective. The acting is mostly top notch as you would expect from this impressive cast list. The film also draws interesting comparisons between the deaths of Kennedy and Oswald - showing the same medical team from Parkland hospital fighting to save both lives (at different times and to different extent) and between the two starkly different funerals.

Overall, an interesting effort I thought.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh, the humanity, 23 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst never quite reaching the heights of JFK (this is NOT a conspiracy film) this film still delivers the goods with a wonderful cast really selling the trauma of that day. I was moved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not really Parkland, 20 Aug 2014
By

This is a fine movie although far, I suspect, from being the last word on JFK's assassination. My issues are that although the movie is called 'Parkland' and spends a bit of time at 'Parkland Hospital' more time is spent following a variety of interesting, but not strictly Parkland or medical or hospital back stories - Zapruder, Oswald's mother, Oswald's brother and the local secret service guy collectively get substantially more screen time. 'Parkland' as a title is a bit misleading. I was looking forward to more of a doctors and nurses procedural autopsy type treatment that perhaps implied, but did not confirm, a whiff of conspiracy. There may still be room for another movie that does just that. Particularly now that Jackie Kennedy's estate are to release some conspiracy-laden audio tapes that she made. But notwithstanding the above, I thoroughly enjoyed Parkland. It is a worthy addition to the JFK canon.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE STORY GOES ON AND ON, 19 April 2014

Bit disappointing when compared to Oliver Stone's JFK which was definitely 5-Star. Promised more than it delivered. Personally like most of the JFK related yarns.
