Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting is a thoughtful, occasionally harrowing, debut poetry collection from Kevin Powers. While the title poem may not actually be the strongest in the collection (I think that honour might go to ‘After Leaving McGuire Veterans Hospital for the Last Time’ or ‘Improvised Explosive Device’) it is good and certainly sets the tone of this volume dedicated to lyrically expressing the experience of going to war and then surviving to make it back home. This is an emotional and evocative collection based around the poet’s own experiences as a soldier and offers a valuable, moving insight into the affects of war. I would also highly recommend Kevin Powers’ excellent novel, The Yellow Birds, as well.
