In my opinion one of the best and most interesting of the series
nearly all the tracks were well produced early soul or R&B recordings .
My favourite tracks were Paul Gayton's "Hot Cross Buns" together with the Joe Tex Tracks
I think it goes without saying the Barrett Strong "Money" is obviously outstanding.
I also see Lamont Dozier under the guise of Lamont Anthony makes his debut.

Virtually the whole Anna Records catalogue on this bargain two disc set. I'd have to say the quality is variable, in particular there isn't much evidence of that Funk Brothers backing that came to define the Motown sound, even though some of them were session musicians at Anna - and Marvin Gaye played drums! But what the hey, Joe Tex will never let you down, and there's more than enough here to justify the purchase, not least David Ruffin and Lamont Anthony (aka Dozier). Definitely for anyone interested or who loves Motown.

I've been a fan of Tamla Motown since it was first introduced on the pirate radio stations Radio Caroline and later Radio London by Tony Blackburn back in 1964. This 2cd set is setting the sound as Anna Records 1959 to 1961 which was one of the forerunners of that Motown sound we all know and love. There are 40 tracks of pure pre-Motown magic as issued in the USA. Amongst the artists appearing here are David Ruffin, Barrett Strong, Paul Gayten, Falcons and Joe Tex amongst others. It is a fact that these early tracks would see little or no play here in the UK which makes them very unique for anyone who likes the records of Motown. I'd often wondered what these fine tracks would sound like and I'm a little biased when I say I love them all. I like the history of Motown and this great 2cd set, copied from vinyl singles of the day, is well worth a visit. Enjoy this slice of nostalgia and wonder where all the years went from 1959 to 1961! Happy listening.
