This a good story let down by poor proof reading and some major factual errors. The worst error of all (which brings one of the books in the series into complete disrepute, albeit the error is repeated a little less importantly in other books) is the fact that unlike the Britist Army, the Royal Navy NEVER, EVER allowed the purchase of an officers commission and certainly not a Captaincy.

Some of the other errors in the series were just sloppy research. You don't pass by the Nore when entering Portsmoth Harbour, you might however if you were on your way to Chatham Harbour (another major Naval Base) and nor were common sailers ever given leave during the Napoleonic wars. In addition some of the place names used in the books were wrong and the spelling was at times laughable.

However, that said, most of the storyline was very good but a bit more research about facts, figures and places together with some competent proof reading would have made the series a classic!
