3.0 out of 5 stars A promising start
This has the potential for a good series although the idea of a child so young making his own way in the world stretches the imagination.

Unlike most books of this genre which are written following a hero forward through time, this book, (as the Intro explains) is the view of an old admiral looking back over his life.
So read this tale as if you were listening to an old sailor relating his life, with the advantage of hindsight to know what effects
decisions taken at the time would have in the future.
This novel is not written by a great wordsmith with long intensely detailed descriptive passages, it is much more the homely honest language I would expect if listening to an ordinary person reminiscing about his life.
With this view in mind it is easy to forgive discrepancies like the fact that Ben seems to grow and shrink a few inches now and then. and a year is always shorter looking back than looking forward.
All in all, a heart warming tale of just what grit and determination can achieve against adversity.

A bit Boy's Ownish but a good introduction to the old Royal Navy where details of ships and how they work are well defined

2.0 out of 5 stars About a child and rather childlike in its telling., 31 May 2014

The story could have been so much better if it had not wildly overblown itself. Not really believable. Disappointing to read

2.0 out of 5 stars an overlong foundation for future sales., 27 May 2014

A poor novel that seems more about showing the author's knowledge of 18th century sailing ships and setting up a series of novels than taking a theme and efficiently developing it. The characterisation is poor and the scenario unbelievable in it's detail.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just an average read., 31 Mar 2014

This review is from: Humble Launching, A Story of a Little Boy Growing Up at Sea (The Rundel Series Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Just an average read. The author I feel is not quite sure what he wants of his main character. He seems to want him to learn every aspect of a sailing ship from ships boy to sailor, gunnery expert, surgeon, admiral. He flits between the present and the future in a confusing way. That said the book was slow paced in the beginning but as I read further I felt I wanted to read more. When I had finished the book I felt that the author had an excellent knowledge of sailing ships but I don't feel inclined to read anymore of the series. Sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting but quite difficult to read., 5 Mar 2014

I like all books written about the French/European naval wars of the 18th and 19th centuries. This is quite unusual in my experience, however it is very interesting, concentrating on the life of a young orphan of the late 19th century who has acquired naval ambitions. I am looking forward to living his life inthe next 8 books.

I am only giving four stars because it was not easy to read (poor grammar, which is surprising considering the academic credentials of the author.).

Am keen on historical naval novels, and this is the first time I have read a story concerning the earlylife of a boy who becomes a sailor - I found it interesting and an insight into the early life of many young lads at that time who became sailors. A very good and well researched book
