Christmas is beginning to arrive and so has Natalie in a village north of Glasgow. It is her first time in Scotland. That does not matter she is here to help at The Sugar and Spice Bakery whilst its owner is incapacitated.

Jacob has been to university and is waiting to start his life, his working life. Trouble is he has tried interview after interview, he has no shame and will take any job even if he appears to be overqualified. Working at The Sugar and Spice Bakery will do because at least it is work.

Stanley is missing his wife, Edie so much so that he still makes her a cup of tea every morning and sits and chats to her. They used to enjoy their time in The Sugar and Spice Bakery every week but on his own, it does not feel the same.

Meredith has an all consuming passion: business. It is her life, she eats and breathes it and expects her PA, Sophie to as well. Sophie escapes every day when she visits The Sugar and Spice Bakery to get Meredith's carrot cake. It is not only the cakes that are warm and welcoming there it is the atmosphere as well.

Rachel, thought she had the man of her dreams and a settled life. She was wrong, he has walked out and she now needs to survive on her own, make her own decisions and stand up for what she believes in. Surely a helping piece of cake at The Sugar and Spice Bakery and a read of a newspaper might change everything?

It is the bakery which is the centre of the world of characters that Susan Buchanan has created. However, from it, their stories all ripple out as if a stone has been dropped into a pond. They are all characters you can love and hate in equal measure, and you only want good for them, even if they are slightly exasperating. The cakes and the history of Christmas around the world which is invoked in the bakery comes across well, it is a book to cuddle up on the sofa with and just simply enjoy (eating cake at the same time would be a bonus). Great Christmas read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Festive Cheer!, 22 Dec 2013

I have read a dozen books this month all related to a Christmas theme , all so I could get into the spirit of the season! Out of all the books read this has been the most festive and christmasy of the lot and only the second deserving a 5 star rating in my opinion. The book left me feeling all warm, cosy and fuzzy inside. I lost myself in all the characters that Natalie was trying to aid - from Meredith, Jacob, Stanley and Rebecca. Although in the book she does also indirectly help Sophie too! The whole story was centred around a bakery and the mouthwatering cakes that Natalie cooked from around the world, many of which were different varieties of christmas cakes. Its in the bakery where all the main characters congregated and interacted, which resulted in the story developing in a positive way for all the individuals involved. I wondered what magical ingredients Natalie was adding to the cakes at one point for some of the characters to change the way they did and in particular Meredith. Having said that it was a collection of events all occurring at the bakery that resulted in the events unfolding the way they did. This was a truly wonderful book and I am so pleased to have discovered this author via twitter no less! I will be reading more from Susan in the future most definitely! Well Done.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delicious and hearwarming story, 15 Feb 2014

A lovely tale of (Natalie) hope. Natalie arrives on Scotland and within a month has changed the lives of five locals. Meredith a compulsive workaholic who is shown that family life is just as important as a career and is more enjoyable. Sophie - Meredith's long suffering assistant is finally given the recognition she deserves and meets Jacob into the bargain. Jacob is down on his luck. He and his sister, Tabitha spent his childhood years in boarding schools. Now he has finished university he is struggling to find work, until Natalie offers him a job at Sugar and Spice. He discovers that Tabitha is expecting her first child and wants him to be the godfather. He meets and falls on love with Rebecca who has just split from a long-term boyfriend and lost her dream home. However, leaving her e-reader at home on charge one day proves to be life changing. The most heartwarming story has to be that of Stanley. Recently widowed, Stanley is dreading his first Christmas alone, until he is told about a group that meets daily. He meets people of similar age in the same position. The most beautiful part of Stanley's story is when his grandson arrives in Scotland to get married on Loch Lomond so that Stanley can attend and spend Christmas day with friends and family.
A truly lovely novel which can be enjoyed at any time of year

Aw what a brilliant book! Starts off where you have to read about all the characters in the story, at first I wondered where the plot was going, but, when you've read about the characters, then the story begins.....It all focus on the 'Sugar and Spice' Café.
You are then take into their day to day life surrounding the café...

But...there's a fab twist at the end!

Highly recommend reading it!
