4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic live album by one of the world's best performers!, 27 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Live And Kickin' (Audio CD)
I have seen Suzi Q in concert more times than I can count... even at 63, her energy, voice and playing ability are still very much in essence. I have never seen anyone work a room like this woman can.

So, imagine the power and excitement that can come out of a live album recorded when she was 27!

Mainly songs taken from her fourth album, Aggro-Phobia, each track is performed fantastically, with lots of synthesiser and honky tonk piano to accompany Len Tuckey's screaming guitar, matched with Dave Neal's pounding drums and Suzi's thumping bass.

Although there are only four hits on the album: Can the Can, Tear Me Apart, Devil Gate Drive and The Wild One, the whole CD is worth it's weight in gold- I'm amazed that until Cherry Red released this version, it was only available in Japan and Australia, apart from a limited re-release in the 1990's.

The highlight for me (a bass player) is What's It Like to be Loved. Apart from being my favourite album track on the studio album, Aggro-Phobia, this extended version features a sterling bass solo from Suzi, who Creem magazine voted the 3rd greatest bass player in the world just two years before this recording was made.

Forget The Who Live at Leeds, get some Live & Kickin' stomping on your stereo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suzi - Live and Raw, 12 Feb. 2014

I had the original vinyl release of this back in 70s and wish I still did (it must be worth a dollar or two).

But listening to this CD reminds me of why (in my youth) this recording found its way to the "non essential" pile. You can't fault the playing or the singing from Suzi or her backing group. Its the production (or lack of it) on the voices or the instruments. Compared to the early RAK studio records there is nothing about the vocals or instrument playing that immediately grabs your attention. Maybe her studio efforts were over produced, with echo and other effects?

Here on this recording its just plain Suzi Quatro and her group playing tunes from her (then) recent recording, plus a handful of hits, "just as it is" live with a minimum of production. If you ever wondered if Suzi could really sing or play, then this is the album that will answer your question. The answer is a resounding "Yes".

The past 35 years or so have allowed me to appreciate her music for what it was. Some honestly played Rock 'n' Roll.

She does admit to having a sore throat on the liner notes, and it certainly feels that she is protecting her voice slightly. Not as raunchy as she was on studio cuts, but a nice little memento
