Tristano never seems to deliver other than himself. Deep experienced thoughts (although he said he never thought while he played) must have preceded this virtuoso solo performance. Technically brilliant with underlying feeling providing a unique experience. Technical, yes, but improvised. It takes several maybe multiple hearings to appreciate what this man does with the piano keys through his ideas. The ballads alone are worthy of purchase and will repay the replays
time and again. He spent his latter years mainly teaching including Lee Konitz. What an advertisement for his musical insight!

Every note in every song on this CD is perfect. Every note is beautiful. The bass lines in the left hand are models for any bass player. What a sound!
And what incredible piano playing. It is a subject for psychoanalysis that this great man could be consistently overlooked by people writing about the great pianists in jazz. What swing! What momentum! And the ballad performance of "You Don't Know What Love Is" is hauntingly beautiful and deeply felt.

If you haven't heard this record you are in for a treat and a bit of a shock.

I did expected something like that, but it exceeded all my expectations. Take it and listen and you will get my point. Unique master of piano, unique composer and absolutely unique personality - all in one gives an unforgettable and enormously rich experience, leading to a different approach to the jazz improvisation evaluation. My favorite!
