TOP 500 REVIEWERon 17 August 2015
The title of the blu-ray is somewhat misleading as The Riddick "collection" doesn't actually include the most recent film Riddick 2013. The collection was released two months before as a way I suspect to boost sales before Riddick was released. While slightly disappointing, if you know what you're buying (I upgraded from my dvd's and already had Riddick on blu-ray), this is still a decent collection of sci-fi films for the most part.

Firstly it should be said the collection consists of the original cult classic Pitch Black, the animated short Dark Fury which bridges the gap between the two movies in the collection and finally Chronicles of Riddick. There is nothing special or new from what I can see, it's simply the films from their normal stand alone releases bundled into one case.

Pitch Black -
The film that started the series. Released fifteen years ago in 2000, Pitch Black follows the marooned passengers of a commercial cargo ship the Hunter Gratzner that crash lands on a hostile planet. On the ship along with normal crew and passengers is Richard B. Riddick, a wanted murderer who escapes after the crash. The planet however is riddled with extremely dangerous flying creatures that come out at night, with an eclipse coming Riddick and the rest of the passengers must work together if any of them are to survive.

Brilliant film despite it's relatively low budget, or maybe because of it. Riddick is a fantastic character and just a generally badass anti-hero and the plot was really original at the time. Despite it's age now the special effects are still pretty decent if dated. The creatures all look great and the props and sets are still perfect. If you like sci-fi and haven't seen Pitch Black, you should.

Dark Fury -
I hadn't actually seen Dark Fury previously to this collection. Released around the time of Chronicles of Riddick to promote the film it was a straight to dvd animation. Set shortly after the survivors escape the planet in Pitch Black their shuttle is captured by a giant merc ship. The commander of these mercs, Antonia Chillingsworth is a little crazy though and likes to freeze criminals in a form of cryo as living statues, her form of art, making Riddick a prize catch. Obviously he isn't all to pleased and fights to escape her clutches.

Where to begin? The good news is that the actors all reprise their roles for the voice acting. That's it for good news, bad news is it's on a DVD despite being a Blu-Ray collection, but frankly it doesn't matter because the quality is terrible. The image doesn't even fill the screen leaving huge black borders, the animation is just awful especially the art designs, every character is seriously ugly. Even stranger half way through the art for the characters seemed to change so Riddick's limbs suddenly looked way longer. Just dire.

Chronicles of Riddick -
Set five years after Pitch Black, Chronicles has Riddick being hunted by Mercs for Imam one of the survivors from Pitch Black. He needs Riddick's help as a huge army called Necromongers are heading towards his planet. Imam believes Riddick to be a Furyan, a race of legendary warriors, and hopes he will help them fight.

I loved this film when it first came out and having rewatched it I still think it's great though the special effects in places have aged surprisingly badly in places. Riddick is still a fantastic anti-hero and the supporting cast with Karl Urban as a tough as nails necromonger and Alexa Davalos playing a much older Jack make a good mix. The film is full of action from start to end including some seriously cool set pieces on a prison planet.
Both the blu-rays for the main films have a decent plethera of extras to work through and Chronicles has an expanded directors cut which I personally wasn't too keen on but it's a nice inclusion.

All in all as long as you're aware this doesn't include Riddick this is a great pair of science fiction movies. It's rare to have a true anti hero in films nowdays and Vin Diesel as Riddick does it so well.

Recommended

With the release of the latest film simply titled as 'Riddick' (which is a decent film itself) I thought it necessary to catch up on the films that I quite enjoyed. Pitch Black is my preferred film, haven't yet watched the animated sequel, and Chronicles of Riddick isn't as good as the first one, but still a decent affair with lots of good action sequences but the cinematic release was a 12...so no gory sequences here unlike Pitch Black and the newest one. Still, great set of Sci-Fi action flicks which I would recommend to anyone!

besides Star Wars, The Chronicles of Riddick universe is one of my favourite sci fi sagas. It includes the first 3 films, The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black(1st film), The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2nd film) and the 3rd is called The Chronicles of Riddick. It follows the story of a ex-convict called Riddick( Played by a man called Vin Diesel) who is one of the few people belonging to the furyan race left. In Pitch Black we are introduced to the him and the universe when he is trapped with other people on a desert world and they find out they are not alone. Dark Fury fills in the gap between Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. The 3rd Film expands greatly on Riddicks character and where he came from. I also recommend to purchase the Riddick video games called The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. They are both prequels to Pitch Black and expand more on Riddick and Johns backstory and relationship. The 1st and 3rd film are in blue ray while the 2nd is in dvd format. The blue ray editions give the extended versions of the films, deleted scenes, Johns and Tombs journeys to capture Riddick. The dvd also has some extra features which are about the animations which is cool. Overall it is a brilliant collection for any Vin Diesel and sci fi fan. Don't forget to purchase the newest film on blue ray and dvd. It is just called Riddick.

You'd think that it would include the last Riddick film. Amazon refund policy involved return postage almost the value of the box set.

Films themselves are great but I am a fan, watch them and form your own opinion. The box set contents not so much.

Of all the Blu-Rays I have ever bought, this must be the worst rip-off ever. Everything about this box screams trilogy: it is the Riddick COLLECTION, there are THREE MOVIES LISTED AT THE BOTTOM of the box, each corresponding with the names of the three Riddick movies, And then we have the reviews, where the reviews link to the TRILOGY on DVD ...

Well, before anyone else is sorely disappointed, this bundle only contains the first two movies and some lousy DVD. Given the omission of the last movie, this collection is even very expensive. You can easily buy the first and second movie and save a pound or two while doing so. Overall, keep away from this collection ...

this is worth every penny love the riddick films however wasnt a big fan of the animation film in this collection but the other 2 films were brilliant and the transfer to blu ray shows clearer picture for pitch black less foggy looking and the chronicles of riddick also a worthy upgrade

The Riddick collection did NOT include the 2013 film, but an Animated prequel to the Chronicles of Riddick (I think - I must confess I've not seen it yet). But if you like Pitch Black, its a great collection to have
