I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to on this occasion. The book just does not feel right, it is a mis match of re told stories from other books, just put together and re issued. The same thing over and over again without any real meat on the bones. No real details of the events, really dissapointed

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding achievement., 26 Mar. 2014

This review is from: MRF Shadow Troop: The untold true story of top secret British military intelligence undercover operations in Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1972-1974 (Kindle Edition)
Simon Cursey's excellent treatise on the ultra-secret, shadowy Military Reaction Force (MRF) derived from first-hand experience of covertly operating in an effective theatre of war primarily in Belfast, Northern Ireland is quite undoubtedly a timely testament to the valour, unflinching resolve, commitment and heroism of a small band of British soldiers dedicated to preserving law and order, averting all-out anarchy and civil war in Ulster, and asserting the legitimate authority of the British State by instilling fear and chaos in the swelling ranks of militant republicanism during the early 1970s. Quite frankly, the book is an outstanding achievement, written in a lucid and frank style without pretension or self-glorification. Sometimes, in a desperate bid to safeguard democratic freedoms and privileges, exceptional ad interim measures are required and justified in exceptional circumstances, even if that translates into tacitly endorsing a moderate "shoot-to-kill" policy to protect ordinary, innocent citizens from the unpardonable excesses of murderous paramilitarism, irrespective of religious or political persuasion or allegiance. Mr Cursey's book exemplifies this contentious point, to good effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting account of ugly times., 20 April 2014

I have no idea of the truth of the undercover operations performed on behalf of the security forces during the Northern Ireland Troubles but if this account tells it as it is then it well worth the read. I cannot imagine the stress these operative were under but it is good to read the author has found peace in the aftermath.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read all the same, 6 Aug. 2014
Honest account of Simon Cursey's account of his time in Northern Ireland. Though after forty years i think you should be able to form an open personal opinion rather than retain the view disiplined into you by a bigoted Army. Fantastic read all the same.

This is by far the best book I have read about the troubles. It is well written and keeps one interested throughout. It's not about hero's, it's about brave men trying to rectify government mistakes and bring peace to a troubled city.

A book that will put a lot of the troubles into context and shows the lengths that people were required to go to to try and ensure safety and security in a time of uncertainty.

Pretty basic fayre, I've no doubt black ops took place on NI, however I would suggest they were carried out by special forces. In the current climate who puts their hand up to state sponsored murder? Big boys rulesa better read.

I served as cannon fodder in the mid 70's no mention of MRF anywhere. I just wished we had the same criteria of engagement, stuff the yellow card.
I wish you well in your new career.
