IMPORTANT: Windows 7 is a very good upgrade from XP or VISTA. I have upgraded a couple of our computers this way during the last year. On 18.Nov.2014 I ordered another copy to upgrade from XP for a friend of ours. After hours of downloads the software finally installed, but the important 'validation' process was blocked by Microsoft. I have returned the software DVD and Amazon's excellent returns policy means I should soon get a refund. However - checking on the MS site today, to confirm the final support dates for their OS software, they give 31.Oct.2014 as the final installation date for Windows 7 as OEM/preinstalled software. Which, as I understand it, means that any copy of Windows 7 not installed by 31st October will not be validated by Microsoft. At least this is my interpretation of the situation. It would be wise, before thinking of a new purchase of Windows 7 as an upgrade, to check the situation regarded final install dates for yourself.

Needed to upgrade from Windows Vista and decided I would do a clean install of Windows 7. I didn't know that this was a programme for installation by computer-builders and almost gave up when I received it. Delivery was prompt.
I emailed the seller regarding my ability to install (65 year old, female, non-tech person). What I received was a friendly email stating that it was easy to do, don't forget to update drivers etc., and good luck. I spent Easter weekend doing the install - with little or no difficulty, and replaced all my own programmes to be up and running fully in just a couple of days.
Have had no problems with Windows 7. Pleased that I did it myself.

I just hope this review will give hope to all non tech minded people out there trying to upgrade from XP.
My 9 year old 8400 was just about ready for silicone heaven, but this update should see me wright until windows 10.

I was running XP Professional 32 Bit with Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz with 3.3 GB of ram and 500 Gig Hard Drive.

Just go to the Microsoft website, look for XP upgrade options, forget Windows 8, download Windows 7 upgrade adviser, run it and see how bad the damage is going to be, then use the info on the adviser to find the drivers or system updates you need.

On the Microsoft website there is a very useful video on the upgrade, just follow the instructions about custom installation and using Windows Easy Transfer. Don't forget to print off the Upgrading from windows XP to Windows 7 document before you start.

All you do is run the Easy Transfer program, stick the disk in and follow the custom installation instructions.
Watch out for the product key it really is small and i don't need glasses!

When it has finished re- install your Docs and Pics using Easy Transfer and then come the dreaded Windows updates I had 147 which was a bit scary, so I took the dog out, mowed the lawn, washed the car and after 3 hours everything was fine.

All but 1 of my programs was compatible, my printers external hard drive anti-virus and unbelievably Office 2003 were all fine.

Much easier to do than I first thought. I did purchase a new larger hard drive as I struggled to get the 16GB of free space on my old one. Upgrade to Windows 7 instructions were clear, first did check as suggested on Microsoft website. I decided to put it as a clean install on a larger HD and leave the XP drive in case of problems (none so far) so did a clean installation, really worth the little extra and Windows 7 is a great improvement, and my XP software and drivers are working without a problem. The product code was very small so I wrote it down with any variations that might occur to facilitate entry. Be aware that there will be LOADS of software updates to be done. Would do the same again.

I bought this item to replace Windows XP

I would have had to buy a new laptop, which we couldn't afford and I really am not interested in learning new technology, like Windows 8 or 8.1

Windows 7 is enough for my needs at 74 years of age!!!

Regards Mrs Burton

An easy solution to the needed XP Upgrade.

The use of the Microsoft Upgrade paperwork, available on the Internet, made the job very easy.

This disk was bought to upgrade a very old computer running XP to Windows 7 and was bought directly from Amazon. It arrived next day in frustration free packaging with the product codes all attached on the packakging. It proved to be awkward to install as the computer would not boot from the DVD drivers no matter what I did. After doing some research on the Internet I came across a solution which eventually worked by going into Safe mode with Command prompt and eventually selected the DVD drive and typed in setup to get the program installing. The rest of the installation went as expected. The activation went through without a hitch and it is now running the computer as well as can be expected on such an old computer. I like Win 7 and hope my friend whose computer it is does as well.

Description states that this disc can't be used for an upgrade installation. This is incorrect I installed using the upgrade option without problems, once installed I entered the product key supplied and activated on line without any issue. Very easy any one could do this, just need patience, put the disc in the CD drive click update option and leave for a couple of hours.

I couldn't have bought this OEM version cheaper elsewhere, definitely worth it's weight in gold. It took no time at all to load it.
