5.0 out of 5 stars Tank Warfare - eye-opening history and a primer in battle tactics
This is grass roots book that describes the development of the battle tank, warts and all, from its beginnings before WW1 through to obsolesence after WW2. Lots of technical data, personality conflicts, analysis of different nations' approach to the new weapon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite dated now
Curiously potted history of tank warfare that sort of covers the 20th century. Appears to have never been updated since it's first publication back in the Seventies.
Would be fascinating if there was just more to it and it was updated to include the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, the Iran/Iraq war, Desert Storm and the subsequent Middle Eastern conflicts.

This is grass roots book that describes the development of the battle tank, warts and all, from its beginnings before WW1 through to obsolesence after WW2. Lots of technical data, personality conflicts, analysis of different nations' approach to the new weapon.
From war films, I got the impression that tank warfare was an orderly and heroic process but, in this book, found a mess of failed technical starts, bad planning, built-in obsolescence, incompetance at all levels, rivalry with the cavalry, empire building and interservice rivalry, poor understanding of how to use them. Only the Germans, Russians and Montgomery seem to come out of the story with any credibility. The tank was conceived, in the earliest days, either as a mobile gun platform or an armoured troop carrier. Understanding of how to use it to puncture enemy lines, supported by infantry, was slow in coming and very much a trial and error.process. The tactics of battle are highly dynamic and however ingenious the strategy sent down from the top, the main problem turns out to be a lack of local information about the development of the battle once it starts so things can get pretty chaotic with tanks in all the wrong places like a bad football game.
The style of English occasionally is a tad stilted and sentences get ambiguous but not a significant problem.

Really good and informative book. Covers the whole panoply of armoured warfare from 1914-18 until the mid 1970s. Would be interesting to have the book updated to include the conflicts in Iraq where the tank played a significant role.

Tank battles described from WW1 to the 1960's. Kenneth Mack looks at tank design, development, and tactics during this period. I found the book quite interesting as far as it goes. It flags in the 1960s when addressing the future of tanks.

Excellent introduction to the subject, needing some updating pro be completely useful. Overall a good read, though more pictures and battle maps would be useful additions.
