This review is from: I'd Give You Anything If I Could (Audio CD)
Guitarist, singer, harmonica player Mervyn 'Harmonica' Hinds has been a feature of the Chicago club scene since the 1970s playing and recording with Koko Taylor, Lefty Dizz, John Primer, Eddie Taylor Jr. and Mud Morganfield. He still plays at Buddy Guy's Legends Club today, as well as at blues festivals both in the States and internationally. This record was recorded in 2013 but sounds very 70s with some tracks, like the instrumental "Way down south" sounding even older harking back to early 20th century blues. Hinds' vocals and harmonica playing are fairly basic but both do have a certain charm, as does the backing, which at times is fairly rudimentary but is really authentic and can also really swing. The main problem here is that there aren't enough good songs, as demonstrated by the number of instrumentals and the fact that several tracks from his previous album are reworked on this one, including "Cuddle Inn", "You're looking good" and "Anything if I could".
