5.0 out of 5 stars Delius comes home to Norway, 14 Jan 2014

This review is from: Delius In Norway [Sir Andrew Davis, Anne Helen Moen] [Chandos: CHSA 5131] (Audio CD)
Sir Andrew Davis and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra have made a sterling contribution to our increasing fascination with Anglo-Scandinavian connections from around the time Norway obtained its independence in 1905. The performances here are all first class and the Chandos recording in the Grieg Concert Hall in Bergen is of demonstration quality. In anyone should still doubt Delius's position as a member of the "master composer" category then this recording should settle the matter once and for all. How much poorer the classical music world would have been without the combined presences of Grieg, Grainger and Delius. The reputations of all three are only heightened with the passing of time and this most timely recording does full justice to the material. The combination of a British master conductor and a top Norwegian orchestra is unbeatable.

This review is from: Delius In Norway [Sir Andrew Davis, Anne Helen Moen] [Chandos: CHSA 5131] (Audio CD)
This most enjoyable disc with 2 great Delian tone paintings (Eventyr and Paa Vidderne), 2 orchestral classics in a lighter vein (Cuckoo and Sleigh Ride), a suite of incidental music and 2 orchestrated songs is – for me – where Chandos is at it’s best: a clear and warm recording with silky strings, good booklet notes and unearthed, not much played, music. I mean, will you ever hear this in the concert hall? Not over here in Holland, we only play Mahhhhhhhhhhhhhhler, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky nowadays. Chandos and the like do a great job by making possible to collect and hear this music and I can only hope they’ll continue on this path. The Amazon warning: Please Note: Requires SACD-compatible hardware isn’t entirely true: If you put these discs into a normal CD-player you get glorious Stereo results. Only the SACD layer of these discs can’t be reproduced without a SACD-player. The same for the Multi-Channel option.

Wonderful - could listen to it all day - and I do! If you are a Delius devotee, no problem. If you are not, try this!
