4.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Look at A Great Band
Finding anything related to Rockpile anymore is a challange, but to have a set from the fabled Rockpalast series come out is a special occasion! So now that the praises are out of the way, let's talk about the recording. Is it a great recording? No. It's fair at best. The song selection is first rate bouncing between Nick and Dave's solo work and a couple of songs by...

This is a great little concert which is let down by the quality of the sound. The sound lacks bottom end as the bass and drums are lost in the mix. The cd and the dvd sound much the same both lacking in bottom end.

The redeeming feature of this is that it is a great concert by Rockpile as they are four very talented musicians. They also have three main singers with Dave Edmunds the best as I see it. As this is possibly the only concert vision by Rockpile that is around it is worth buying for that reason.

So now that the praises are out of the way, let's talk about the recording. Is it a great recording? No. It's fair at best. The song selection is first rate bouncing between Nick and Dave's solo work and a couple of songs by Billy from the Rockpile album, so song quality is good, it just doesn't sound that great, a bit rough and flat. But if you are a) a Rockpile fan; b) a Dave Edmunds fan; c) a Nick Lowe fan you are going to want this CD/DVD combo!

Rockpile were chronically under-recorded AS Rockpile due to Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe being signed to different labels as solo artists during most of their existence, so although they played on quite a lot of records (mostly by Edmunds or Lowe) they only released one album in their own right. So this very overdue hour-long live album, recorded at Hamburg's Markthalle on 12 January 1980, is only their second release. From that point of view, it's extremely welcome, as they were a superb live act and always good value for money.

As an actual Rockpile performance, though, I've certainly seen better ones - which is to say much of the time it's very fine but there are a few mistakes or indifferent solos, with Billy Bremner visibly making rueful eye contact with Terry Williams after one particularly mis-timed effort. These blemishes are few and mostly gone in seconds - the real problem is that the sound is quite rough and ready, with Terry Williams's superb drums in particular being quite distorted. The vocals - especially Lowe's - aren't always that intelligible either, which is a shame given the quality of the lyrics of Edmunds and Lowe's originals and the more recent cover versions by the likes of Costello, Mickey Jupp and Graham Parker; Edmunds is certainly in fine voice though, as is Billy Bremner.

I find the slightly inferior sound quality is much less bothersome watching the DVD, even though the picture quality is very much of its time and the DVD doesn't actually sound any better than the CD - with the latter, you're forced to concentrate on the sound rather than the whole performance. They certainly look like they're having fun, as do the very enthusiastic audience, who are, however, unable to dance due to the gig taking place in an unsuitable seated venue.

So - an average gig with slightly disappointing sound by a band great enough to make this still a largely entertaining release, especially on the DVD - if they issue a DVD-only version I'd buy that.

I have waited years for this to come out. Years. And it is worth it, well worth it. The audio is excellent and to watch Rockpile play live again (I saw them on the 77 Stiff tour and in 1978 at Mancheter University) is just great. What a tight band. This has been too long coming. Buy and enjoy.
