4.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with each listening...., 13 Jan 2014

This is an interesting album by Francis Dunnery as the songs are mainly from his brother's old 70s band and so pays homage to him as a brother and guitarist who sadly passed away a few years ago. The first track is written by Francis and is great and like everything (mostly) on the album is electric guitar, bass and drums and so there is a feeling of a raw band playing which is a refreshing change from the mainly acoustic output, albeit brilliant, from his albums previously. On first listen the songs do tend to sound very similar, mainly down to the lack of over-production but as with so many great albums repeated listens pay off and there are some great melodies that start to come to the fore. The musicianship is great at you would expect and its good to hear him letting rip on the guitar which will please many fans. Some of the songs remindme of early Rush and Genesis in places which is no surprise given his brother's band were around at the sametime and Francis is certainly a big fan of Genesis at least. I recommend this album highly but don't expect to fall in love with it immediatley but all good things..........

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to see you back Mr Dunnery!, 10 Jan 2014
This review is from: FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER (Audio CD)
I thought it was only fair after I reviewed 'Made in Space' to review Francis Dunnery's new Album, 'Frankenstein Monster'. Well after falling out of Love with Frankie for a little while I'm pleased to say this new album has been playing round the house, in the car etc. Great return to form! The title track is undoubtedly the best and my 16 year old Son says the 'the best song of 2013!' praise indeed!.............however he has been brainwashed since before he was born with Dunnery playing in the car constantly even when he was still in the womb! However.......it is a great album and after the first track it takes on a 70's prog rock feel, guitar solo's with real attitude a plenty!

I absolutely love the title track and had they all been in the same vein it would be a 5 star, this however is not to criticise the other tracks which all stand up well! I can just imagine Francis saying 'let's give them what they want!' after the harsh reviews of 'Made in Space' however it was never about the Singer it's about the songs! I think he took it all very personally! I listen to Francis Dunnery because I love his voice and the way he constructs his music, however I think his audience has matured over the years and if it doesn't sound good they won't buy it! It's no more complicated than that!

Rest assured this does sound good! If you're nervous about buying the album after 'Made in Space' check out the title track video! Awesome! Good job Frankie!

Francis has dusted down the guitars, and put the Made in Space error behind him...and come up with a fine ELECTRIC guitar album, that Big Brother Baz,would be totally proud of.The feel and mix of this,is one of pure rock(Seventies),some softer moments, but in the main, guitar music, not heard of since Welcome to the Wild Country...its a guitarists work, that only Francis can produce, subtle but powerful...impressive Man

I've been following the talented Mr Dunnery since the demise of It Bites and during that time his affection for the electric guitar has gradually diminished, culminating in the almost completely acoustic Gully Flats Boys and then the (in my opinion) misguided effort that was Made In Space.
After a couple of listens I wouldn't say I am mad about this yet, it has a very 70s retro feel about it as you would expect with most of the songs being from that era. However it is really refreshing to hear one of this islands greatest guitarists return to the electric guitar with such enthusiasm. Definitely a positive return to form from the big man and long may it continue.
As an aside - great drumming performance from Tony beard as well.

I have been a fan of Francis Dunnery since the It Bites days and have followed him through his solo carerer and have never been dissapointed. This is a fantastic album and a great tribute to his late brother. One day the world is going to wake up and realise what a gem of a musician we have in this country and a master songwriter.Keep up the great work my friend and catch you on your next tour.
