4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Standard Statham Fare
A DEA agent (Statham) goes into hiding after being involved in the killing of a Hell's Angels gang leader's son. He winds up in a town populated by rednecks with short fuses, the sort of people who could pick a fight in an empty room. He falls out with a redneck couple, whose brother (James Franco) is enlisted to exact retribution on the agent. Statham is his usual...

I like Statham, James Franco made a credible baddie, but Stallone's screenplay was too predictable and disappointing, wouldn't watch it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars CRAZY WAITING TO HAPPEN, 8 Dec 2013

Phil Broker (Jason Statham) is a former NARC who must now lay low due to getting the son of a crime boss killed. He is living in Louisiana which allows them to use a better soundtrack and crazy characters. His wife has passed on, he has a daughter Maddy (Izabela Vidovic) and a wanna be formulaic relationship with school counselor Susan Hatch(Rachelle Lefevre). He draws attention to himself while trying to live with a low profile, attention that endangers the life of both him and his daughter.

As art imitates life, James Franco plays the crazy bad guy and Winona Ryder his trashy girlfriend.

This is one of the better Statham films I have seen. It includes the usual tough guy talk, fighting, killings, chase scenes, and explosions. It also includes a colorful support cast with Kate Bosworth and Marcus Hester as realistic people. Bosworth was a pistol.

Worth seeing for fans of action films.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, garage sex, no nudity. Deals with meth manufacture and use.

A good build up of tension and the best acting I have seen from Statham but it is a shame there was just not enough hand to hand fights, one short good one and the last half of the film is very poor with James Franco turning out to be a wet weekend and not the hard man his character is made out to be.

THIS IS EXACTLY what u want to see from jason's movies.
it had suspense, good acting and plot and of course lot of violence.
For me this could have been even better if they had chose to built a romance between jason and that besutiful teacher cause they had great chemistry but they did not and that's why i would give this 4.5 stars if i could.
never the less this is a must have for the fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Action Drama, 25 April 2014
By
Chris Jackets (Hellingly, East Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews

Jason Statham is rapidly becoming THE action hero in Hollywood these days and this story of an ex-FDA agent trying to settle down to a quiet life with his ten year old daughter has him on top of his form. Sylvester Stallon is better known for his own Rocky movies and as a star in several tough man roles, but he is the scriptwriter for this movie and he has done a brilliant job. OTT certainly, but it has sufficient 'ring-of-truth' about it for you to totally identify with the lead characters. That there is a huge amount of fist and gun fighting goes without saying, but this is a great action drama amongst the very best of this type of movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stath's keeping the wood burning, 8 April 2014

Ex-undercover DEA agent Phil Broker (Statham) retires to a sleepy Southern Town near New Orleans, USA , with his 9 year old daughter Maddy (Vidovic), after a recent job went bad & the son of the head operation he was infiltrating was killed & the father wants Broker dead. Now 2 years later & living a quiet life, a school yard fracas with his daughter & a local boy starts a feud that draws unwanted attention onto the Broker family. As it snowballs into a deadly situation where his old drug dealing boss finds out where he is.

Overall the story of Homefront is nice & simple to follow with the odd implausibility to hurdle over, as it's action set pieces & psychological suspense keeps you on tenterhooks, which you'd expect when you realize it's a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone. Unsurprisingly then, the movie starts & ends with high explosive set pieces while maintaining a decent pace of thrills & action to offset the drama inbetween. Which itself is a very amiable father/daughter relationship that helps endear us more to Broker's cause. Pleasingly they go old school with real stunts & no CGI. The cinematography is very eye catching with some panoramic shots doing great justice to New Orleans & it's surrounding area. The upbeat country-esque music was nice & suited well also.

The cast on the whole do a good job. Jason Statham (The Transporter) put's in his usual solid innings with his decent acting abilities backed up with some fast & furious beat downs, both giving & receiving. While showing a more tender side, as tender as Statham can be *cough* matcho *cough*, with his daughter. James Franco (Oz) was an odd choice as the baddie, he was good in the psychological face off's & mind games. But his clean looks & boyish charm was hard to buy him as the nasty bad guy, even with that tuft of beard. I kept waiting for him to go berserk or something, but never happened in a meaningful way. That is probably why they out sourced the menacing stuff to the more imposing baddies like Frank Grillo (The Grey) who briefly impressed as an enforcer. Kate Bosworth (21) & Winona Ryder (Black Swan) do good turns as drug addicts on different sides of the conflict. Young actress Izabela Vidovic is impressive & has a good rapport with Statham as his on screen daughter Maddy, her facial expressions alone summed up situations well, one to watch. Also co-stars of note, Clancy Brown (Sleepy Hollow) , Omar Benson Miller (CSI Miami) & Chuck Zito (Sons of Anarchy).

In conclusion, it's not perfect but as Jason Statham films go, this is gold star material, and the dramatic side with father/daughter was a nice bonus. Contains strong language, graphic violence & mature themes. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid thriller, 25 Mar 2014

This film's screenplay was written by Sylvester Stallone and I could picture a young Sly in the leading role. Perhaps he intended it for himself but gave it to his friend Jason Statham instead. Whatever happened this is a good solid thriller about a retired DEA agent falling foul of local badasses who call in the bad guys from his past to settle a grudge.
There is nothing new here but the storyline is okay and flows well and there is plenty of action. Its also set in Louisiana and I love films set here. Even Shreveport gets a mention (True Blood anyone?).
The lovely Kate Bosworth is a little underused as a hint of love interest and Winona Ryder plays comfortably out of her usual comfort zone as white trash.
Overall this is a film worth watching if you like this genre. I watched it on the same day as the new Thor and preferred this.

I'm a huge Statham fan. This movie is let down by an average script and plot and poor performances from James Franco and Winona Ryder. The action is explosive and the fight scenes are great. Overall it's 6 out of 10, but worth seeing.
