4.0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE MONEY?
Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth) is a young man living in NYC in the late 70's. He manages to get a job as a security guard which involves large amounts of money, little security, and over whelming temptation. 3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming
This film started out with so much promise. The eighties look appeared authentic with what sounded like Tavares playing in the background and the premise was good but it just never really went anywhere. The story is allegedly based on what was then the highest grossing burglary in US history carried out by a complete idiot and his naïve buddy played by Liam Hemsworth...

Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth) is a young man living in NYC in the late 70's. He manages to get a job as a security guard which involves large amounts of money, little security, and over whelming temptation. He lives in a neighborhood of Greeks, along with his loud mouth, foul mouth friend Eddie (Michael Angarano). He is the classic idiot side kick who messes everything up.

Eddie has big dreams for the money that Chris guards and desires to be a big shot, even though no one can stand him. Dwayne Johnson plays the investigating officer and comes in about half way through. His name as well as Emma Roberts are over billed for their actual roles. The film is based on an actual robbery, and like real crime, it is more akin to "dumb crook news" than a master criminal.

The film makes for an entertaining action drama.

Parental Guidance: Plenty of F-bombs. No sex or nudity.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANS OF ROCK WILL LIKE IT, 20 Mar 2014
This review is from: Empire State (DVD)
Its good film, Rock is the rock and its got a good story.

I just find it hard to believe how rubbish the security was for such a large amount of money and also how easy the guy got through the roof with all that protection.

That aside its a good film on the whole.

This film started out with so much promise. The eighties look appeared authentic with what sounded like Tavares playing in the background and the premise was good but it just never really went anywhere. The story is allegedly based on what was then the highest grossing burglary in US history carried out by a complete idiot and his naïve buddy played by Liam Hemsworth who gets a job as a guard in the most sloppy security company in America. It plays like it is an accurate portrayal of what happened because it is so low key and ordinary that you begin to wish the director had spiced it up a bit. It takes ages to get off the ground then explodes like a damp squib.
Dwayne Johnson playing himself with a badge is probably the best thing in this film apart from the period setting. Emma Roberts looks nice in a wig but is hardly utilised. Michael Angarano as Hemsworth's sidekick Eddie who just can't keep his mouth shut is either a total ass or a brilliant actor because you will want to slap him after about ten minutes.
This is definitely a film to rent if you're a Rock or Hemsworth fan, otherwise give it a miss.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 20 April 2014

I hate to buck the trend but I was very disappointed by the film. Very very slow, obvious plot and just not engaging at all.

If you made a film about the dumbest robbers, but also the luckiest, this would be it. Most of the way through the film I wanted to slap both the main characters for being so...well dumb. Pretty low key movie, takes far too long to do nothing then goes on to do nothing worth watching. Love DJ, but wonder why he got himself involved with this. If you have nothing better to do one night give it a look in, otherwise, give it a miss.

3.0 out of 5 stars looks like it was made as a vehicle to launch Liam ..., 11 July 2014
This review is from: Empire State (DVD)
Quite low budget, lacking in some much needed sub-Plots, possibly too true to its origins, looks like it was made as a vehicle to launch Liam Hemsworth but like his inept sidekicks and crooked acquaintances, it blunders along and eventually expires.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stagnant State, 4 Jun 2014

This review is from: Empire State [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
'Empire State' is a crime drama film, based on a true story that released direct to video in 2013. The reception has been poor on release.

The movie shows two friends (Liam Hemsworth and Michael Angarano) being responsible for the robbery of an armored truck company. They are ultimately investigated by an NYPD detective (Dwayne Johnson).

The feature had a promising cast and an interesting true story to go by. Unfortunately, what we see is a generic and boring heist thriller. Nothing really exciting happens for the full duration. Just one basic scene after the other.

Performances by Hemsworth and Angarano are the only notable and just about competent aspects of this movie. Mr. Johnson has only 10-15 minutes of screen time and there is nothing to rave about.

Dito Montiel's direction is uninteresting and the film is as predictable as it gets.

'Empire State' was released direct to video for a reason. However, I would wait out for the television release.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good plot and attention to the period details - 1982, 5 May 2014
This review is from: Empire State (Blu-ray)
The main strength of this film is it's attention to the period details e.g. 1982 - however this is also it's downfall as it comes across as a "made for TV" daytime offering.

The plot is good and the acting serviceable.

Just not that interesting and I am surprised that it got a big screen release.

Passes the time though.
