5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to a quality band, 15 Jan 2014

Signed to the Beatles' label, Apple, in the late 1960's, at first the future seemed bright for Badfinger. Between 1970 and 1972 they scored four hits, starting with Come And Get It (written by Paul McCartney).

But they were more than capable of writing their own hits, and No Matter What, Day After Day and Baby Blue would all be international successes for them. Another Badfinger song, Without You, would give Harry Nilsson a number 1 Billboard hit single.

Mismangement would mean that their career never really fufilled this early promise and tragedy would strike the band with the suicides of two key members, Pete Ham and Tom Evans. But although the group is largely forgotten today, it can't be denied that during their time together they produced some quality pop music which can rightly be called timeless.

This CD serves as a good introduction to the group. It doesn't include any rarities, but it does at least use the 2010 remasters. It appears that the compilation has come about due to Baby Blue being featured in the season finale of Breaking Bad.

Whatever the reason, Timeless is a excellent snapshot of a classic Welsh band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legendary underated band, 11 Dec 2013

Wonderful to have a new Badfinger compilation, and Apple was generous to license a couple of later Warner tracks for inclusion. But what fans REALLY want and need is an ultimate multi disc box set, including the unreleased Head First album, choice cuts from Airwaves and Say No More, as well as archive material of demos, unreleased tracks, live versions, and a DVD of live performances. Are the folks from Apple/EMI listening?

This is actually a good Badfinger compilation. The music is great and the CD could be a good place to start, if you're unfamiliar with the music of Badfinger. I'm sure any Beatles fan will enjoy the music, but it must be noted that Badfinger was much more than just a Beatles rip-off.

Badfinger had Pete Ham, who was an outstanding singer and songwriter, and not least an unusually gifted guitarist, which may not be so obvious on this compilation, which has its main focus on the singles. On "Suitcase" and especially on "Timeless" you may get an idea of his skills.

Obviously there will be different opinions on which songs would be the right ones for a compilation like this, but the good thing is that most of Badfinger's great albums are re-released and easily available. The four Apple albums are released with many great bonus-tracks that are not just poor sounding demos and outtakes. Most of these songs should have been released in the first place.

The two Warner albums have also been re-released recently, though not remastered and without bonus-tracks. Now that it has been documented that the once thought lost multitrack-masters for the third Warner albums have been found; it's high time that Warner's get their act together and release "Head First" in its whole, and hopefully a box-set featuring some of the known unreleased songs that were recorded during 1973-75. Until then, enjoy "Timeless... The Musical Legacy"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great but ill-fated group of early seventies, 21 April 2014

Badfinger comprised Pete Ham (vocals, guitar), Tom Evans (bass), Joey Molland (quitar, keyboards) and Mike Gibbins (drums). They had two UK top five hits (Come and get it, No matter what) and a UK top ten hit (Day after day). These singles also did well in America, but the early promise was not sustained.

Perhaps their biggest legacy to pop music was a song that Pete and Tom wrote, but which was not a hit for Badfinger, although they recorded the song (and their version is included here). It is, of course, Without you. This haunting ballad became an international number one hit for Nilsson in 1972. It later became a country top ten hit for T G Sheppard in the eighties and a UK number one hit for Mariah Carey in the nineties.

Here you get the original recordings of the four songs already mentioned and many other excellent songs recorded for the Apple label, with a couple of later tracks. Things went badly wrong for the group after they left Apple, leading to Pete committing suicide in 1975 and Tom following suit in 1983.

This album catches all there great songs, well worth getting if your into that late sixties early seventies sound, very `Beatlesk`, there early stuff was actually released on The Beatles `Apple` label and although they wrote there own songs they did have some help in writing, producing and playing from Paul and George.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings back memories, but still stands today, 3 May 2014

I bought this after hearing "Day After Day" on The Sound (Waikato) for the first time in decades. I was stunned by how modern it still sounds. The album is a real treat, as these were so familiar to me in the early 1970's, but what I had not appreciated back then was the unmistakable sound of George Harrison's guitar work on "Day After Day", nor the origin of Harry Nilsson's "Without You". Some other classics on this compilation, Like "No Matter", from a band which did not endure because of its tragic history.
