All these tracks were recorded in 1971/72, which is my favourite period of Townes' career, and most of the tracks appear in different form on 'High, Low and In Between' and 'The Late Great Townes van Zandt'. CD1 features studio sessions with full backing, while CD2 mostly features just Townes and his guitar. The quality of the recordings and performances is excellent, and even if you own the two aforementioned albums, you are going to want to have this too. There are also two songs I've never heard of before, including the title track, which are great and two early versions of Dead Flowers. This is definitely the most important Townes release since 'In the Beginning'. A 'must have' for Townes collectors and a great introduction for those new to his music.

Sunshine Boy is about as good as music gets.Disc 1 is fantastic with a more subtle production than on some of the versions that were on the High Low and Late Great records.White Freightliner is the best version i've heard yet but it's Disc 2 that most of Townes fans will really love.Townes songs sound the best with little or no production as is the case here.To Live Is To Fly,Highway Kind,Greensboro Woman and Mr.Mudd & Mr.Gold are absolutely stunning and as stark as the Texas plains. They were of course already top draw Townes songs but the real revelations for me are the brilliant versions of You Are Not Needed Now and Standin these songs have gone on to another level for me now.If only all of townes music had been recorded this way.Sunshine Boy is essential for any fan of Townes music and a good place to start if you are thinking of becoming one.Hopefully this will get the ball rolling and there will be more Townes releases to come. There is supposed to be a treasure trove of studio and live stuff out there.I'd love a release of the demos from '68 to '71.

All songs on disc one are different versions from the ones that were released on his albums (except track 1, 3 and 16). They sound less polished.

Disc one: studio sessions

1) T for Texas (previously unissued studio recording)
2) Who do you love
3) Sunshine boy (b-side of "If I Needed You")
4) Where I lead me
5) Blue Ridge Mountains
6) No deal
7) Pancho and Lefty (alternate 1972 mix without strings and horns)
8) To live is to fly
9) You are not needed now
10) Don't take it too bad
11) Sad Cinderella
12) Mr. Mudd & Mr. Gold
13) White Freight Liner blues
14) Two hands
15) Lungs
16) Dead Flowers (previously unissued studio recording)

All the songs on disc two are demos. Townes and his guitar.

Disc two: demos

1) Heavenly houseboat blues
2) Diamond heel blues (previously unissued studio recording)
3) To live is to fly
4) Tower song
5) You are not needed now
6) Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold
7) Highway kind
8) Greensboro woman
9) When he offers his hand
10) Dead flowers (previously unissued studio recording)
11) Old paint (previously unissued studio recording)
12) Standin'

The alternate versions shine a new light on the familiar released ones. And the new songs are a nice gift on this beautiful double cd.

These studio sessions are amazing. It's a given that the songs are genius, but the tone and the feel are warm and beautiful, even funky on Where I Lead Me. My personal favourite is the solo version of Mr. Gold and Mr. Mudd, but almost all have made it onto the mp3 player. The best Townes Van Zandt album you can buy!

If you are into Townes this is for you. Nice versions of some of his classic songs, sound quality is very good. I suspect that if you are into Townes you will have this, if not it is a good starting point.

Great collection of demos on disc 2. Townes at his best. The demos highlight Townes' poetic folk touch. His songs needed only the lightest production. Shame cowboy jack went to work with a sledge hammer.
