4.0 out of 5 stars there is great potential in this, 6 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Under the Skin (Ritual Crime Unit Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Things I liked: Set in rural Yorkshire instead of a city.
The main character isn't some youth but a middle-aged woman. Thereby it avoids the whole rites of passage angle which I am sick of.
Great world-building.
Humour
Felt like real Yorkshire plod.
Gruesome at times. excellent. :)

Things I didn't like so much:
Felt like a short story even though it was a novel and ended a bit abruptly. You could probably get way more incident in this and have the entire skinwalker crime in the prologue.
I want to know more about the characters and hope to in other books.

Definitely worth buying though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting absorbing new style adult, but novella length, thriller from YA author Richardson., 8 Feb 2014

Having read all of Richardson's previous YA novels (though I am an adult I read a lot from that genre), I was pleased to discover her new one on Amazon Kindle. She writes pacily, always entertainingly and tells a good yarn. This was the case again with 'Under the Skin', but I was a little disappointed at its novella type length ,as it was not a full length novel. I, as the reader, would have liked more and I think there was definitely more story to tell here. That aside it was great fun, created a world where Ritual magic and the crimes that go with it, was very believable and I would like to read more in this series, if a series is planned (?) Pierce made a convincing middle aged overweight but deadly sharp, police woman and was very likeable.

OK, so you're a UK resident and whilst you've been able to glut on Urban Fantasy State side, finding some crackers in the UK has not only been hard but few and far between. Well add to the likes of Ben Aaronovitch and Suzanne McLeod, we now have EE Richardson, whose wonderful Ritual Crime Unit brings the things that go bump to the crime reader who wants something a little different.

The principle character is cracking, has many facets and at a time when we know that money is tight for all, to find a cracking little unit fighting the good fight against the otherworldly unusual then this is the time to get something cracking in to sup and prepare for a journey. Its definitely different, has some great twists and when backed with a wonderful pace that keeps you guessing as to whom is playing for which side all round makes this a book that was too hard to put down. So much so it was a late night reading session to see how events would play out.

All round a cracking new name for readers to get their teeth into. (In more than the proverbial sense. LOL) Great stuff.
