I really enjoyed the storyline of this book, although it was harrowing at times. There were just a few things that I found irritating. I couldn't relate or empathise at all with the main character Jefferson Winter. Despite lots of descriptives relating to his upbringing, what he wore and his constant fixation with cigarettes, I just didn't feel anything for him. The book also portrays him as being the only person capable of solving this crime and he seems above and beyond the law, which was very unrealistic, as was the way he seemed to work things out, without actually divulging how he had done so.

I have lost count of just how many books I have read in this genre on my kindle, fifty per cent of which were deleted after the first few chapters, I'm a hard one to please. James Carol, a complete unknown entity before I read this is now up there in my top ten. If you want a book you cannot put down don't hesitate read this A word of warning bed time is not time to start reading this because once you start you're hooked, I should know I started it at about ten o'clock last night and read through the night, now I've finished it I can't wait to read another of his books. KEEP THEM COMING JAMES .

Format: PaperbackVine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
The protagonist in this thriller doesn't kill his victims, he tortures them for months then lobotomises them, leaving them as 'broken dolls'.
Ex-FBI profiler Jefferson Winter is called in by his friend at Scotland Yard to help track down this psychopath before he strikes again. There have already been four victims and now a fifth is in his grasp. Can they reach her in time before she is condemned to a fate worse than death?
Well written and fast paced, I raced through this in two days at work and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be looking out for more of Mr Winter's exploits.

I loved this and its the start of a new series with the next in the series just out
called watch me. I am confident the high standard will be maintained.

I don't want to give anything away but I will say I was concerned that there might be too much detail
in the violent parts but it was just right, not something that normally bothers me but i think the reason was because
i cared about the characters (i know too many buts)

please do not hesitate to read this as you will miss a good one but make sure you have nothing else planned !

I bought this mainly on the strength of the high number of favourable reviews, after I'd read the promising-to-be-a-bit-different beginning. The rest of the book proved to be a huge let down. Great swathes of tedious narrative take the plot nowhere and tempt the reader to give up and do something worthwhile - and the slightly ridiculous characterisation of Jefferson Winter does the protagonist no favours. Whilst the author has plainly done some research into serial killers, he has not done enough. Ditto profilers, FBI or otherwise. Carol would also do well to remember that sometimes the suggestion of what horrors are to come can be far more effective than a blow by blow (and at times very boring) account of gory procedure.

There is a new hero in my life and his name is Jefferson Winter! When I started this book a couple of days ago I was concerned as some fellow bookworms in my book club said it was so gory and they had to take a breather during the book...... Not me..... It was perfect for me (but now I am concerned how warped or depraved I am!). Each chapter galloped by at a fast pace, the dialogue and characters were faultless and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. So much so that I am about to start book 2 right now! (less)

After reading a lot of positive reviews on this book, I thought I would give it a go. What I didn't anticipate however was the fact that this book is one of the best crime novels I have read in a long time. This debut novel from James Carol has blown my mind. A very creative and clever story with surprise twists and turns at every corner and an unexpected character at the end. I highly recommend this book to any crime thriller enthusiast out there. I cannot wait for the next instalment in the Jefferson Winter Series.

If you like a real roller coaster ride thriller this is a good choice. I found myself reading this book at every opportunity, carried away by Winter"s ability to take the reader on a chilling and often scary journey through the mind of the bad guy. The story unfolds slowly with twists and turns. Winter is a maverick but one you warm to and you are soon applauding his unorthodox methods to get the job done before it's too late. I have just bought the first two Winter books and can't wait to start them.
