This review is from: Her Finest Decca Recordings 1955-1958 (Audio CD)
Carmen McRae, A Collection of her finest Decca recordings 1955 - 1958, NOT3CD135

This 75 track collection with liner notes from Helen Akitt is one of three similar sets covering female vocalists that have been released in November 2013.

As the collection title says these are all Decca recordings. The earliest of the tracks comes from a session dated May 2, 1955 and "A Fine Romance" CD1/3 comes from that set. Sessions on June 14 & 16, 1955 resulted in songs for the album on Decca LP 12": DL-8173 - By Special Request.

November 3, 1955 resulted in songs for the Decca LP 12": DL-8316 - The Feminine Touch, Jack Pleis (dir), Jack Pleis Orchestra (acc).

Sessions on December 16, 29 &30, 1955 resulted in songs for the album on Decca LP 12": DL-8267 - Torchy! Jack Pleis (dir), Jack Pleis Orchestra (acc).

March 28, 29 & 30,1956 resulted in songs for the Decca LP 12": DL-8347 - Blue Moon (1957), Tadd Dameron (con, a), Tadd Dameron Orchestra (acc).

February 18 & 19, 1957 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8490 - Boy Meets Girl (1957), Sammy Davis Jr., Carmen McRae (v), Jack Pleis Orchestra (acc).

March 6 & April 18,1957 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8583 - After Glow (1957), Ike Isaacs (b), Ronnell Bright, Carmen McRae (p), Specs Wright (d)

June 18,19 & 20, 1957 sessions resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8662 - Mad About The Man (1957), Jack Pleis (dir).

Sessions on December 5 & 16, 1957 & April 21, 1958 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8738 - Carmen For Cool Ones (1958), Fred Katz (con, cll, a).

August 4, 6 & 8,1958 resulted in Decca LP 12": DL-8815 - Birds of A Feather (1958), Ralph Burns (dir, a).

Carmen McRae 1920 -1994 was named best new female singer by Down Beat magazine in 1954. The set includes 5 images of Carmen McRae and the years of recording are quoted. Listen out for some duets with Sammy Davis Jnr and songs associated with birds. The sheer volume of songs and the great asking price makes this a snip. The running times for the CDs are as follows CD1: 78.41; CD2: 75.30 & CD3: 75.21. Look out for classic jazz collections on the Not Now Music label as they represent great value for money and offer a window into the world of great jazz performers.
