5.0 out of 5 stars 6 well spent, 29 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Photographer's Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II (Kindle Edition)
If you've just spent 500 on a Sony RX100 II what you've bought is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Its small (make that very small) size means that it looks and handles like a "point & shoot" compact camera but, as you know because that's why you bought it, hidden beneath this is a very serious, professional level piece of kit.

Its deceptively simple, brilliantly engineered and superficially simple form factor hide a piece of state of the art photographic technology that deserves taking time out to understand exactly what it can do and how it can do it. And, for an additional 6 (in its Kindle format) you can find out because this equally brilliant guide will carefully take you through everything this camera can do with the minimum of fuss, jargon and techno-babble to place you in total control of all its huge number of features.

It will tell you which features & options are useful, which might be, and which aren't and it will tell you how to set up the features you want from the host of options that can be accessed from the RX100 II's very clever programmable buttons & dials so that they're readily available in real time situations. And, as you read through it all, you'll gain comprehensive and invaluable insight into exactly what this amazing camera can do.

What's more, the Kindle edition (at a fraction of the price of the paperback edition) is actually what you want because, in addition to being able to bookmark and annotate the parts of the guide that are relevant to how you'll actually use the camera, these and the book's comprehensive index of its features will be available to you on your phone or tablet to be called up when you need them.

As another reviewer says this is "the book Sony should include with the camera" - it's miles ahead of what Sony include in the box or on their website and it's very difficult to see how it could be improved upon - for an additional 6 it's an absolute bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb book, buy this if you have the camera., 29 Aug 2014

This review is from: Photographer's Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II (Kindle Edition)
A very useful, easy to read, comprehensive guide to the camera. Your camera does much more than you might imagine and is capable of taking astounding pictures. However, doing this, in all sort of conditions and circumstances will require you to understand how it works and how to control it. If you can work out how to easily set the camera to shoot pictures 3 stops down and then zoom into a shot picture to examine the sharpness of the picture, then you might not need this book. Otherwise, definitely buy the book. Your camera is very powerful, learn how to use its excellent controls.
Also if you buy it on Kindle, and use Kindle on all your smart devices, then you will always have it available to hand as a useful reference book.

There's quite a lot you can configure on this camera, and the good thing about this book is it gives guidance and makes suggestions as how best to configure and use the various features. Saves time in doing it by trial and error, and has also got me to use some useful features I otherwise wouldn't have. It also gives a very detailed description of what each option does and how to use it, and in that way is more useful than Sony's own on-line manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be supplied with the camera, 8 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There can be no question. If you have this camera then you will need this book. The manual supplied by Sony is not good enough. In fact to say that it is not good enough is paying it a complement - it is useless. The Photographer's Guide to the Sony Dsc-Rx100 II is well written and covers all you will ever need for this camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book Sony should include with the camera, 7 Feb 2014
The manual for the RX100 is minimal and the user guide telegraphic. The built in help useful mainly when you already know what it contains. Almost anyone who buys the camera should by this book.

The Sony RX100 is a superb but complex bit of kit - more complicated in some ways than many DSLRs because so much has been packed into so few external controls and clever automations. This book serves as both an introduction and an (almost) comprehensive manual. The only thing missing for general use is the table of icons from the Sony user guide. A further chapter on use under water would be welcome, but there is enough information here to let you adapt advice from elsewhere to the RX100. The detailed step-by-step guides to some of the more complex procedures such as setting up the memory recall function and some of the video features are particularly welcome. Along the way there are some good photography tips.

If you have a tablet, get an electronic version that can be searched quickly and where the table of contents is hyperlinked to the content. But it needs colour. iPad, Kindle Fire, etc. On a mono-Kindle it is well nigh useless.

This is a first class guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 II compact camera. It is very comprehensive, easy to understand and well illustrated. The book has over 400 pages and though, some may feel the outlay unnecessary, I'm sure this book will prove invaluable to the vast majority of would-be photographers. It has taught me a great deal.

Excellent. Just what is required for a brilliant camera with a huge range of features. I am an experienced photographer with several cameras. It gave me the information I needed in a straightforward manner. Further, it would be just as good for someone with no prior knowledge of cameras.
