4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky and fun movie
Wasn't expected too much from this title but it was actually pretty entertaining. Quirky and likable characters (even the idiot boss who takes them on their trip) get up to silly things, with some funny lines and situations in it. Plus the main 'time travel' guy was like a very family friendly version of Kenny Powers from Eastbound and Down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok film, not great.
I chose this film because it had good reviews, but I found it a little boring. Not highly recommended by me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the 1 star, he hasn't seen the movie, 31 Jan 2013
Please ignore the low average, some person didn't realise US dvds wouldn't work on standard UK dvd players so thusly gave a great film 1 star.

Safety not Guaranteed is a brilliant and very quirky film that is one of the most original films I've seen in a long time. Based off of a simple premise, this is a very different film and a very different love story. It is very engaging, with great characters and humour (a lot of Star Wars references, director is a big fan) taking this above and beyond your average love story. Starting off as a simple story of journalists searching down someone who wrote an ad in a newspaper looking for a partner to travel back in time with, this becomes so much more. With brilliant acting and very good direction this is a film you don't want to miss.

Everyone has written reviews which are far more eloquent than I could write and have said it more succinctly than I ever could. Needless to say this film is BRILLIANT!

I very rarely say this if ever but WATCH THIS FILM!!! My heart and soul feel a little bit lighter for watching this movie.

Safety not guaranteed is a low budget independent film production. The story involves three employees of Seattle Magazine. Darius, a smart independent girl who doesn't quite fit in. Her fellow intern, the shy and naïve internet gamer Arnau, plus their somewhat cyncial boss Jeff.

All three have come to a small seaside community in search of a person who put out a classified ad looking for a partner. But not as usual with these, for romance. Rather for someone to travel through time with them.

Thinking that whoever placed the advert is crazy and thus might make a good story, the three are there to track the person down and get a magazine piece out of it.

Jeff is also there for another reason. Getting back in touch with a high school sweetheart.

When Darius manages to track down Kenneth, the man who placed the ad, she manages to gain his trust. And has to go through a series of tests to see if she is suitable to travel with him.

Kenneth seems paranoid. And thinks he's being spied on.

But an unlikely bond results.

The three are about to find that sometimes, what you get isn't what you expected. But it might be better...

The box might lead you to think this is a comedy and/or a science fiction movie. It's not really either. The time travel being but a driving force for the narrative. There are some funny moments, but those are occasional and arise out of genuine and good character interaction.

It's really a character drama. All about wanting to change the past, and the present to be different. And how you can make your life better in unexpected ways. How safety isn't guaranteed when it comes to making life changes. But how you have to make the leap.

Despite being a low budget film this doesn't show too often, since it uses locations and location work judiciously. It does also feature some really excellent acting. Aubrey Plaza [Darius] makes her character very sympathetic right from the off, and she and Mark Duplass [Kenneth] do have a great chemistry together.

Although Jeff [Jake Johnson] does start out very obnoxious, he does grow and change and become more sympathetic by the end. The actor portraying this character journey very well.

The ending? It will either leave you punching the air. Very happy. Smiling. Or thinking is that it? What about...

But it's an ending that does fit the spirit of the film perfectly.

The one quote on the box that does sum this accurately is the one that calls it sweet. Because it's a nice film, and a charming viewing experience. It might not work for everyone, but the star rating shows that it certainly did for me.

The dvd has no subtitles at all.

The only language it comes in is English. The audio options are just about dolby sound, nothing else.

It begins with one trailer, which you can skip via the next button on the dvd remote.

The only extra is the original cinema trailer for the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun little slice of American can-do, will-do., 25 Jun 2014
This review is from: Safety Not Guaranteed (DVD) (DVD)
A thoroughly enjoyable little indie from the States. Baffled that anyone could give it a negative review. Like so many American indie productions this embodies the ubiquitous American attitude of optimism and "can-do", as opposed to the widespread English sour, glass-half-empty cynicism so familiar from British TV. . Guest appearances too from Jeff Carlin, still curbing his enthusiasm, and Mary Lynn Rajskub taking a break from feeding Jack Bauer co-ordinates in "24". Be warned though if, like me, you have hearing problems: this DVD has no subtitles. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good quality low budget film, 20 Aug 2014
This review is from: Safety Not Guaranteed (DVD) (DVD)
A wonderfully quirky film. The 'car chase' in this film is at 5mph - and if you like the sound of that it could be the film for you. It is primarily about the interaction between the different characters as the plot slowly unfolds through the film and right to the end you are not quite sure how it will play out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky sci-fi love story, 8 Mar 2014
This review is from: Safety Not Guaranteed (DVD)
‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ is about three journalists who set out to investigate a man who’s seeking a partner to accompany him back in time with. What follows is a slow-burning love story between the female journalist and the man who claims to have the ability to go back to the past.

It’s all very understated. There are no fancy special effects or major A-list actors who could elevate this film to a big hit. However, it plays to its strengths. It’s never so outrageous that it’s an out and out comedy. And it’s never so futuristic that it’s an out and out science fiction piece.

It’s about human nature in slightly odd circumstances. And it works, just. So don’t expect anything too funny, or too out there. Just sit back and watch something pretty gentle and sweet really.
