The subject matter here, Tommy 'Karate' Pitera was a violent psychopath, who spent almost 20 years of his life killing on behalf of the Bonanno mafia family, as well as the other families in New York. This man was pure evil, and extremely sadistic in the manner he killed. He specialised in cutting up the bodies into 6 parts and knew the body almost as well as a surgeon.

With all that to work with you I expected a much better story than I got. The writing is shocking, with so many grammatical errors I find it hard to believe the book was proof read or edited. At times its like the words have just been lifted straight from a recording of a conversation. Then there are all the tangents the author goes off on, going into great detail on small issues that don't seem to have any bearing on the actual story or subject, whilst seemingly breezing over major events - maybe this was because he didn't have the details or info. And with all the clichés used, the writing style detracts the reader too much from what should have been a fascinating story.

Overall, disappointing!

Thomas 'Tommy Karate' Pitera is an interesting enough character in NY Mafia and what could have been a great story has been badly written and doesn't go into enough detail on some important issues, yet drags on across stuff that's not so important to the overall story. It seems the book was written with co-operation of one of Pitera's less important sidekicks, so is more about his personal relationship with Pitera and little insight into Pitera relationship with the rest of the Bonnano family and the other NY Families.

Another good mafia expose from Philip Carlo, though not as good as some of his others from an entertainment stand point, and that's because he's gleaned most of the information about Tommy Pitera from the man's criminal associates, which is fine overall, it's just that Carlo usually gets his perspective directly from his subject.

I throughly enjoyed this book..it is easy to understand an keep up with, considering there are a fair few characters.
I found it gripping as well as quite a shocker!! There is nothing boring about this book for sure.
Tommy Pitera is a madman, out-of-control killer with the guise of a human-being..at times its hard to view this man as
a man an not a monster..God help anyone who crossed him. If you like true crime an have a strong stomach..go for this book..
it's a great read b4 bed!! Just don't have nightmares!!

I bought this for my husband. He was fairly disappointed with it, especially as the synopsis promised big things. He felt the narrative was bitty and at times it was simply confusing and poorly written. He said he didn't really enjoy reading it, but he carried on in the hope it would improve. He wouldn't recommend it!

Not as good as the Iceman by the same author but Mafia fans like me will probably enjoy it but there are so many books on the same theme it seems the Mafia had more hit men than they did members,if youve read the Iceman you will know that Carlo is very graphic in the way he describes the murders so be warned.

fans of 'Ice Man' may be disappointed as this dosent have the in depth interview access which Carlo gained with the book about Kuklinski, The Butcher reads more like a story with some elements of stories feeling a little like a Puzo tale. Still however a fascinating read for anyone interested in the mafia.

I read Ice Man first and this book contradicts a lot of what is in that. So if you have read Ice Man you will find this a good read. Philip Carlo does in to great detail, brillant way of laying the storey line and does explain the connections with Richard Kuklinski in Ice Man.
