A really interesting account of the development of the site as a theme park. The book starts with a brief history of the site and the house's decline (covered in greater detail in another book "Alton Towers: Past and Present") and comprehensively examines the history of the rides, changes in management, projects that never came to fruition, the companies' involvement in other theme park sites, tensions with local residents and future plans (based on a publically available Merlin document reviewing the future, phase 1 of which is now history).

Being one of the UK's best love theme parks, Alton Towers is a place that many in the UK know about and visit every year. What often isn't known however, is the history behind it. From it's days as a stately home, through to a mecca for thrill seekers, there's a story to be told which some people would say is even more intriguing than some of the attractions that grace the park today.
If you've ever wondered how the park came to be what it is today, what it could have been in the past, or even what could be coming in future - this book manages to tell it all. There's clearly a wealth of information out there that Nick has managed to compile to take the reader on a journey from the park's beginnings through to the present day.
Well researched, detailed but yet simple to read, it's clear Nick has gone to huge efforts to cover the park's history over the years. Even those with just a fleeting interest in the theme park industry or even in British history should find this a very enjoyable read.
