more tales from the cutting room floor! it's hard to get your head around the volume of material produced, voiced or dubbed by lee scratch perry. considerable doesn't come close, significant's not in it, vast doesn't compute. bottomless pit, although not possible, is perhaps nearer the mark! throw the question of quality into the mix along with the sheer volume of material, and that's the factor that raises lsp to the level of genius maverick, and indicates that he is in a class of his own. in a world of his own is another question, and it will take better paid minds than mine to answer that one!
but, let's take the experiment further, take all that music, and the material contained in these fabulous pressure sounds compilations, and boil it down (might take considerable time) into one song, and i don't think the end result would be a million miles away from 'stand and look' by the fantels, included here, and a prime example of an lsp production - uplifting, compelling, inventive, and with a message, instantly identifiable as his work, and just generally a blistering tune. and even that might not be the finest material on here! that, to my mind, would be the 7 mins and 52 secs that is 'roaring lion/pride', which is crucial in the extreme, featuring part of an aborted collaboration with augustus pablo. what an album that might have been, we'll never know, as scratch chucked the tapes away (brave/crazy/careless/focussed?). great credit must go to pressure sounds for sourcing this material and bringing it to our attention, as remaining 'lost' or unreleased would have been some sort of crime!
the remainder of the album, i'm afraid, is only brilliant! from the bombastic and frantic 'loco negril', voiced by althea and donna, to the joyous, life affirming unreleased upsetter dubs of 'dyon anasawa', and all places in between, this is a superbly considered and realised collection. all the more stunning considering the fact that the material was scarcely previously available, if at all. thing is, most artists don't even reach the level of the stuff that lee scratch perry leaves lying around on the studio floor. or make you shiver when you hear what they've binned!

Now this is the sort of music that made the Upsetter rightly famous. Smokin dub music at it's finest from Scratch at his creative peak circa 1976 -77. Most of the tracks on this are dub plate mixes of popular riddims at that time, dubbed up and phased echoings swirl around as disembodied vocals float in and out of the mix. The amps and the audience should be smoking when this is playing, the bass bins heaving and shuddering with thunderous bass lines, the tweeters shrieking and wailing as the tortured horns try to escape the echo chamber only to be turned inside out and fed back in.. Truly the work of genius. If you like your dub dirty then this is for you. Probably the best collection of mostly previously unreleased Upsetter music that I've bought for many a year. I strongly recommend this CD to all lovers of real dub music. If you miss it you'll be sorry! This disc will be changing hands for ridiculous amounts of money in a few years time, having gained legendary status amongst those of us who recognise Lee Scratch Perry as the Boss Dub Master.

This is a top-notch selection of dub-plates and versions from Perry's genius period in his Black Ark. Everything is full of killer hooks, great dub echoes, reverbs, and other sonic delights.
If you are mad for LSP then buy this; it's a treat that will keep on giving.
p.s. This is a review of the vinyl, which is nicely pressed and sounds good, a couple of rare tracks aside (prob from vinyl copies rather than the masters). I haven't heard the CD, but the limitations of the format mean that it can't come close to the vinyl version. Please buy Lee on vinyl if you can; the CD can only sound dull and thin comparison.
