4.0 out of 5 stars A Significant Improvement Over Windows 8.0
[2014-04-02 read my added comments re Windows 8.1 Update at the end of this review]

Nearly a year ago (on 2012-10-26 to be exact) I made a review of Windows 8 under a title "Will Windows 8 Flop or Fly?". As a Windows user for many years, I was baffled by what Microsoft was up to and I chose an eye-catching title to express my bewilderment of how Microsoft got...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Start button is back (sort of); other Windows 8 awkwardness remains (and not Linux-friendly)
The initial portion of this review addresses the final stage of an progressive upgrade from Windows 7 with an intermediate step --lasting one year-- at Windows 8 before progressing to Windows 8.1.

Bottom line up front: If you are a power user of Windows 7, and you can keep running your current hardware with a Windows 7 variant: I can't offer a single compelling...

2.0 out of 5 stars Why did Microsoft think that a mobile phone OS would ..., 4 Aug 2014
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (Full Version) (CD-ROM)
Why did Microsoft think that a mobile phone OS would transfer successfully to a desktop or laptop computer as an update to an old OS. -- Total failure. -- Nobody I know likes it.
Everything you want is hidden at a corner or edge and very difficult to end an App.
Nothing seems to make sense anymore. Where is the logic?
Intuitive it is NOT!

I would not recommend that any person brought this Microsoft windows 8.1 software. It does not work on the internet explore at all. It is nothing but a load of adverts that they have put in. Mircosoft wants to go back to the drawing board and start again is my view. They want to charge you for all the extra bit like out look express that came free with XP. No one like this operating system most people are now saying stick with windows 7 if you have it already.Do not upgrade what ever you do. We have wasted our money on this operating system and now will have buy a new hard drive and load in windows 7 it really is that bad. The only thing that works on it is the googe systems the android apps.

Mrs Burford.

1.0 out of 5 stars Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade may be free but it messed up my laptop, 1 Dec 2013
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (Full Version) (CD-ROM)
I made the mistake of believing Microsoft's spin about 8.1 and upgraded my mother-in-law's new windows 8 laptop to 8.1. I thought it all went well until she complained of multiple requests to reboot. Then the wireless refused to connect to her BT hub. After more than half an hour on a call with BT Home help their Indian tech worked beyond the call of duty and assisted me do a driver roll back for the built-in Broadcom wireless modem. Basically we rolled back and switched from the Broadcom driver to the Microsoft driver. So it seems 8.1 has introduced a driver compatibity with the laptop wireless modem - a new laptop designed for Win8!

I would advise PC users to stick with Win 7.

So much easier having the 'Full' version whilst rebuilding my son's machine than the upgrade version that I had to have when my PC was last rebuilt!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cannot really complain!, 20 May 2014
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (Full Version) (CD-ROM)
When the release of Windows 8, the O/S was super fast but super bad with the GUI. Things started to change when Microsoft announced that Windows 8 users are getting a FREE update to 8.1 which comes with more features and a kind of start menu.

After the release of 8.1, there was another update - Windows 8.1 Update 1 which allowed metro view to be minimized and closed as a desktop view would.

Microsoft have also stated that Windows 8 was another Windows Vista moment but instead of making a brand new O/S, they are going to update Windows 8 again. Sounds to me like they are going to release update 2, update 3 etc and hopefully for free.

Comparing this O/S to older versions, this is most definitely the quickest of them all. Booting up in around 10-15 seconds, this flies though most modern and older PC's.
